Despite all of the doom and gloom around here I think there has actually been some very good news. The analytics says that we are trending in the right direction (for the last several years, even when we were on winning streaks, the numbers correctly said that we sucked). Also, Risto magically looks like a top pairing defenseman again. I think he is the kind of player that can't drive play to make the ice slant the other way way but he has the ability to thrive when it is level or slightly tipping the other way (same with Montour).

Anal-lick-ticks= butt numbers

Tampa must’ve been a butt numbers dream but failed in the NHL until they added much needed grit.

Butt numbers are for when management sits down with ownership for a raise.

Do butt numbers put it’s boot on the opponents throat and press until the W is in the bag?

Ownership/Management/Coaching are discussing transphobia awareness night today, the players are getting manicures at Kim’s favorite spa.

This team is the runt of the liter in the NHL even with all these high end draft picks.

This organization is desperate for a bully.

Seriously? What year is this? Tampa's model is to draft extremely well and then get talent on contracts that are favorable to the team. The buffalo model has been to have average drafts and then try to chase (and overpay) talent to make up for the average drafting. Get. more. cheap. talent.

Name the players Tampa picked up on favorable contracts, they draft speed and talent and acquire cheap grit.

The year is 2021, strength with speed is what wins in the NHL

At the time of the okposo contract.... we paid fair market value for him. The Canucks and bruins paid erickson and backes the same type of money.

Skinner just potted 40gs and the market was sky high. Hayes got 7 or 8 mill from the Flyers.

So again. It’s based on how the market is.

We signed hall for lower than market value to to economic times

They re-signed their own players to cheap and favorable contracts (didn't mean to imply that they were getting UFA's on the cheap). Every year we say they are going to lose one of the players that they drafted and it never happens. Speed and talent wins and they have lots of it.

The problem with the Okposo and Skinner contracts wasn't the yearly average, it was the term. Would I have paid Okposo that average for three years? Probably. The term is what is the killer. You can't sign a guy that age to that term.

Agreed.

Again. That was the going rate at the time of the signings

Okposo averaged 60 points his previous 3 years before he signed with buffalo. Backes and Erickson signed the same contract with the same term

Skinner just flat out scores and got 40 with Jack

So it’s easy to say this now. Hindsight is 20/20

they have a couple really good contracts for high-end players...bit they have screwed the pooch on some mid-end players. Getting Stamkos for his ...great; getting Gourde on his w a NTC is just crazy..
Just an example of each.

Capitals - mixed of talent and grit
Blues - 90% grit
Lightning- added schenn/Maroon/even Bogo! to allow their speed and talent to play their way.

Sabres can pick up bullies in F/A, it starts with the mentality of ownership/management/coaching.

Chiefs likely will have running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire but be without Le'Veon Bell for today’s AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills, per source.

Additionally, the Chiefs will test WR Sammy Watkins pregame, but don’t sound optimistic he will play today.

Eff that.

Put some good vibes towards the football team! Stop trying to be right about the score!

The "rate" is for the year. It's always foolish to sign people in their late 20's to long contracts even if the rate is fair in the first year. I think most of us knew that then. The Backes and Erickson contracts were just as foolish. Regardless of sport, you don't make those deals. In baseball they are finally starting to figure that out.

"grit" and "bullies" are two very different things. Being tough means having players that will take a hit to make a play. The era of "bullies" is (thankfully) long gone but not everyone realizes it.

When vegas was starting their team did they mix in "bullies"? No, they selected the fastest guys that were available to them at the time.

Grit and bullies are not different. Schenn/Maroon/even the awful Bogo aren’t John Scott.

After Vegas lost who did they acquire and love in that organization?

Ryan Reeves.

As I said earlier, the problem is with the term. I would have taken Okposo at 6 per for 2 or 3 years. The players that last longer are the ones that can skate and don't play an overly-physical style of play. Hall fits both so I am more likely to consider him on longer term (maybe 5 years). The Tavares contract is good yearly value now but it going to be tough later on because he is already a below-average skater.

Exactly - just like Pittsburgh, they foolishly picked up a bully rather than addressing grit. Radko Gudas is still in the league because teams are foolish in the same way. Find good players that are gritty, like the Blues did with ROR. This isn't the old days where our aircraft carrier had to go fight someone else's carrier.
