No, he’s on DuSable Drive.

Or the 294 or 90. I'm one of those people who always calls them by the number and not by the names like the Eisenhower and Dan Ryan.

With Kubalik on the 3rd line and 2nd PP unit I could see his numbers decline slightly. (He was on the 3rd line and not on the PP at the beginning of last year, but his numbers really took off when he started playing on the Toews/Saad line and the 1st PP unit). His numbers may not decline that much and his 200' game could improve slightly. If so I would consider that a good year for him.

Psst.....the Hawks have a far different opinion of JC than your oft-stated take that the coach shouldn't coach midgets.
- mohel

I hope he saves his money, this will be his last NHL job.

I’m still wondering which young player has improved significantly under JC.

Good question. I thought they had to be cap compliant on day one, but apparently this works...

PROJECTED CAP HIT: $98,016,666
PROJECTED LTIR USED: $16,516,666
PROJECTED CAP SPACE: $0 ($0)
CURRENT CAP SPACE: $0
DEADLINE CAP SPACE: $0
TODAYS CAP HIT: $98,016,666
ROSTER SIZE: 21/23
CONTRACTS: 46/50
RESERVE LIST: 68/90

- Chunk

It wasn't this way when the Hawks had the same issue, they had to be cap compliant on day 1, and then could only LTIR the players after the 1st day.

It was the reason for both the Leddy trade and the Bickell trade.

Once Toews and Dach went down, my expectations for Kubalik (and most of the team) dropped simply because they will now become focal points.

They are under the cap because they placed their LTIR's before day 1. Problem is they do not accrue any cap space from putting these players on LTIR before the season. What that really means is that there is no hope that Kucherov pays this season, as they would not have the space to bring him back. My guess is that Tyler Johnson will be on the taxi squad quite a bit to try and accrue the cap space. Reason he went on waivers.

TBL D- pairs:

Hedman-Rutta
McDonagh-Foote
Sergachev-Cernak

Soooo, Rutta first pair and Sergachev 3rd. Not sure if that is called depth or just spreading everything out?

3 left handed shots, 3 right handed shots. Left side is very strong, Right side, not so much.

I don't remember did the Hawks have any LTIR candidates then or Stan could have obtained them to get around cap problems?

Per my earlier post, just because Stan gave away Teuvo and John's as sweeteners there's no guarantee he will receive like in return now that he has some cap space.

Not being a Chicagoan Theo, you probably would know that there is a movement to change the name Lake Shore Drive to honor Jean Baptiste Point duSable, the African-American who was the first permanent non-indigenous settle in what is now Chicago.

I think you're on point about returns on trades this year. It is going to be really hard to make trades this year (unless something changes with quarantines), and I would guess the "additional pieces" will either be players that are not ready for the show yet or draft picks.

To your first point, I think the Hawks were still trying to compete during those time periods, so they would have wanted to accrue as much cap space as possible, and thus they went LTIR after the first day of the league year.

It’s going to be a chaotic first month of the season for all teams, with a very short training camp and no exhibition games - some surprise teams in both directions until things sort out.

I’m increasingly becoming opposed to naming public spaces after individuals.

There is always something in their backgrounds that legitimately pisses people off and leads to calls for change, justified or not.

Lake Shore Drive is fine. So was Northwest Expressway, Southwest Expressway, and Orchard Field. I have very little understanding who Dan Ryan, Bishop Ford, and Edens were, but I probably wouldn’t like them.

JB Drive has a ring to it.

Be weird calling it anything other than Lake Shore but its better than Capitol One or Bank of America Drive.

They’re also discussing renaming Western Ave. for duSable. There’s some push back on changing LSD, and Western is the longest street in the City.

Renaming Lake Shore Drive would be easier - the wouldn’t have to change many addresses.

Renaming the longest street in the city....

Renaming streets gets complicated.

No surprise there, Rutta has played mostly with Hedman before, they have familiarity with each other and work well together. Hedman is the best Dman in the league right now IMO, that helps Rutta is fine, but if he is not in press box, he will spend most of his even strength ice time next to Hedman, for sure. Sergachev-Cernak is 2nd pair and not 3rd, right?

Nope. I quit that years ago.

Just red wine, and peaty scotch these days.

I know I'm out over my skis on the optimism for his team. What I am trying to do is - publicly - create a framework in which to judge the performance of the Hawks this year. Theo does a great job breaking down a lot of this for me/us, but I want to set the expectations (for the team and the players individually) properly so at the end of this disaster of a season I have something to grade them on.

All of you lucky bastages just have to sit though my ramblings... of you can skip them completely.

- Chunk

I think what's being missed is where are the "good" players in camp to judge the others against? Light small and bad against light small and bad makes half of them not look so light small and bad. A downfall to no exhibition games not that they tell everything.

The extension also may be a way of making sure that Kane, Toews, Keith, Seabrook understand that Colliton is “the guy” for most (all) of the rest of their years in Chicago.
- StLBravesFan

I understand why was Colliton extended, but that right there might be the last nail into the coffin for these guys. In their position, even with all the possible loyalty, convenience and love for Blackhawks and Chicago, I would seriously look for options to finish my career elsewhere. It is one thing to stay on a rebuilding team in general and completely different thing to see at least three more seasons of this ahead of you. They are clearly not on the same page.

So you keep saying....

You could be right, we shall see. What we know now, though, is that an actual NHL team with at least some pedigree thinks he is doing a good job; whereas an internet guy thinks he's not fit to lead a beer league team. Who to believe......

Why are they not on the same page?. What makes them any different than what the Kings are going through? Kopitar and Doughty actually have had more of a dry spell than the Hawks, and they are on board with the rebuild. They have tried to get rid of Brown and Carter, and those contracts are basically untradeable. Quick can be had for cheap. Who knows how long the rebuild will take.? Everyone thought the Rangers rebuild would take years, 2 high draft choices, one big free agent, some players maturing (Zebenijed), and now you have a playoff/contending team.

And don't be surprised this year at the TDL if there is any movement. With quarantines, etc. hard to see any player movement. Especially to and from the North Division.

It's a loaded question if you don't define what you would consider significant improvement (not to mention how to tie that improvement to the coach). I would argue that getting Boqvist to even play respectably in an NHL game is a good example. Dach turned into a #2 center over the course of a year. I would say that was significant. Not to mention he was one of the best players for the team in the bubble. I would say that Debrincat's overall game improved. I would say that Highmore turning into what he is would be a testament to Colliton

But again, if past discussions are any indication, you would consider those examples of the player taking the initiative and having little to nothing to do with Colliton. That certainly is an argument to have, but it doesn't necessarily further the discussion.

True, but the argument goes the other way as well. You don't know how good some of these guys are until they go up against NHL competition in a game. The scrimmage was what it was - a scrimmage against your teammates. We have seen a year of what Kubalik can do. Kane is Kane. I don't even like him, but Strome has produced in this league. Despite your dislike, you cannot deny that ADB is a big point producer in the league. They still have Keith, and Murphy. For a time last year when Keith was out, de Haan was our best D-man. Zadorov is a monster. Janmark and Walmark are responsible players with years in the league, etc...

No one (myself included) is expecting this team to be all that competitive, and in all likelihood they won't be. That said, I wouldn't put it past them to surprise and be quite competitive.
