Again, JVR's career-high goal season in Toronto came with him on the third line at ES. It's the PP time, not his ES line, that is the key.
- bmeltzer

The problem with JVR is not what line he is on, its that he does not give you a consistent effort game in and game out, shift in and shift out. He is extremely streaky, so much so, that by the end of the year you look at his stats and you think, hmmm, I guess he is not as bad as I thought. However when you dive in you see this guy takes entire games off. The same holds true for Jake Voracek. I think both contracts were a mistake, because the last thing you want to do as a team is tie up a significant amount of cap space on inconsistent players. That is why I want no part of Patrick Laine. In hockey, talent is great, but inconsistent talent is an albatross.

Not that I dislike Chuck Fletcher, I kinda just miss Hextall

Oskar Lindblom - Sean Couturier - Travis Konecny
Claude Giroux - Kevin Hayes - Joel Farabee
James van Riemsdyk - Nolan Patrick - Jakub Voracek
Michael Raffl - Scott Laughton - Nicolas Aube-Kubel

Ivan Provorov - Justin Braun
Travis Sanheim - Phi Myers
Robert Hägg - Erik Gustafsson

Carter Hart
Brian Elliott

If you miss Hextall, you can always look at cap friendly and remind yourself how great of a GM he was by examining JVR's and Jake's contracts. Or you can watch Elias Pettersson and Cale Makar play this season, both players Hextall decided were not as good as Nolan Patrick.

Think you’re discrediting Hextall a little here. Patrick was the consensus #1 pick for years. On top of this, at the time It appeared Giroux was hitting a bad decline and we had no solution at center in our prospect pool. Nolan Patrick (which was a miracle we even got 2nd overall pick) was exactly what we needed: a big right shot center man. Jake would have gotten the same contract if he hit Free Agency that year as well. He was that good that season before getting re-signed.

Good to see Sam Morin do his job as his presence was felt. No one took a run at Giroux.

LOL, The entire league would've drafted Patrick over Pettersson and Makar!

We will give it a look in light of this ringing endorsement, but may not be our cup of tea. Probably we are too old.

In general, I like shows that subtly affirm Civilization with a capital C. That doesn't mean good over evil. It means having a higher ideal that is promoted by plot without being bombastic. I don't like shows that put individual over order.

In the British canon, this is pretty much every show really except modern stuff like Black Mirror. They have a long history of that in their literature.

Americans are less subtle people, but in terms of movies, I think of TKA Mocking Bird, and 12 Angry Men and Judgment at Nuremberg. For TV series, all I can think of is The Paper Chase from the 70s. The rest are usually individual over society.
Hence Trump. Even when they are aesthetic, the idea still seems cheap thrills to me. I am probably too old.

I don't like shows that glory in presenting "dystopian futures" and shows that present the present or the future as hopeless or rotten through and through and so on. The only reason any of those are hopeless/rotten is because the people who can change it are too busy lamenting the inevitability of dystopia.

I hear endless allusions to Orwell's 1984 nowadays, especially among the right wingers. Quite amusing, since Orwell was a very committed leftist (albeit a Democratic socialist), who put his own life and ass on line by going to fight in the Spanish civil war against a right wing regime.
