Well, the controversial recordings in question were discovered just last year. So, that is the reason for the "suddenness". - PT21
Spring of 2019... so actually, could have done it last Memoriam.
But if you had read a few words further than what you bolded, you'd see that you're actually making my point... it is indeed Cancel Culture.
For the record... there is contention, backed by fact, that at least one song was a parody from a show, done to show how wrong racism is... also recorded by IIRC Paul Robeson. Also, since last spring's decision came to light, it has been brought to light that Smith did much to crusade for the advancement of minorities through her work and Radio Shows. At the last Flyers Town Hall Meeting at Xfinity, when posed the question, the Flyers basically said that they feared all people might not feel welcomed at Flyers games if the Statue stayed up and the clip of her singing was played, so they cut the ties with the long-time Family member... No matter how you slice or dice it... rightly or wrongly... it was indeed Cancel Coulture. She still was a one time family member who died... just like the others on the memorial clip... she still was eliminated... Who might be next? |

'discovered just last year' they were never lost. As was the knowledge of all the help she gave minorities with her radio program, which seems to be forgotten in all this Kate bashing by the ignorant folks who decided it was easier to bury her than to stand up to a bully and fight for her legacy. |

I have always read your words carefully. Did you provide me the same courtesy? Because the evidence is lacking, so I will request you please try again.
First: I personally think Kate "should" be in there. Because of her involvement and because, as you point out, it is not clear that she was being racist in any way, even for those times.
Second: The Flyers are a for-profit business organization. You may choose to impute other values to them, and we all do, but that is certainly who they are. As it is, they are free to define who they consider as "their family" based on who they believe is their clientele in the present and the future.
Third: About 'Cancel Culture' Many times to white men like us, it seems excessive. But it should also be noted that we are the beneficiaries for a long time of being king of the hill. There is often a failure to relate to the valid grievances of those who were lower down on that hill for a long time because of our actions and indifference.
Sure, sometimes the airing of the grievances is excessive and shrill (and it could be so in this case). But that does not invalidate the legitimacy of the general movement.

I merely pointed out your bolding stopped before the end of the sentence... and that that eliminated stated that it was Cancel Culture... and aldo that you helped prove my point.
You assume that I am white... and I suppose it all depends on the era you are looking at, if your assumption is correct; when my parent and grandparents came to the US I was not... today. I suppose I am... in some peoples minds, but maybe not in other peoples minds... but that doesn't really matter here.
Cancel Culture is a two-way street that I believe is wrong in either direction... is it not wrong to erase or downplay history of any person or race... or religious belief... no matter whom it is directed at? Do you not agree that things have been canceled throughout history, and throughout time by certain people? It is not improper to cancel history of minorities, just as it is not right with Kate Smith here?... ALL Cancel Culture is wrong... minority or majority... and should be stood up against by all who see it... even if it is the "general movement".

Here is the description from the page:
"An in memoriam video for the members of the Flyers family that we have lost"
I added the emphasis.
Flyers family, under the circumstances, is subjective. So, a case can be made that the video is in fact a roll cal of those the Flyers Alumni wish to describe as part of the family. - PT21
The Alumni didn't produce the video. |

First, I am not going to use this stupid "cancel culture" phrase anymore, which suggests the whole thing is innately wrong. I am cancelling it for myself. I will use 'censorship' instead.
I disagree that all censorship of speech relating to historical events is inherently wrong. I personally am almost never offended, but I understand others are by references to hurtful times, and I don't think there is anything unmanly or farcical in respecting those wishes.
I support the banishment of the Redskins name. It was an utter embarrassment that should have been banished a long time ago. I also support the removing of Confederate names from US bases.
I don't support banishing Kate Smith. I don't support condemning Amy Barrett for her old fashioned religious views.
There are those who see oppression in everything, they deserve to be laughed at.
But there are also those who see too little oppression and use the excuse of the first category to dismiss the entire movement towards greater representation and parity. They should be laughed at as well. |

These cancel culture morons are the people that believe they can change the future by erasing the past. Seems to be that Orwell was just a few decades early in predicting our future in "1984".
BTW... PT, I logged into my Xfinity only to find out that NHL Network blocks viewing of content I pay for when I am not at my house. I effing despise Comcast.

Exactly... IIRC, Yankees pulled using the song... The Flyers chose to follow suite, which caused dominoes to fall leading to the statue covering, and then being taken down in the dark of the next Sunday morning... all the while saying that they would investigate the matter further. While the Flyers never released their findings, facts were brought to light about the songs history... as well as Kate Smith's beneficial work in regards to advancing minorities.
The Yankees use of Kate's GBA was not really a major concern... however the Flyers use was steeped in great history over the years, which included personal appearances, two Cups, and many, many years of use in important games--All of which I know you are well aware of--Had the Yankees not pulled the rug from under Kate Smith, what are the chances of the Flyers destroying her Legacy?... This was probably the last straw... and final Dominoe.[//Rant] |

Do you know why actions happened so quickly? Because if they hadn't acted quickly, after the Yankees had, and more evidence was found that was critical, it would have been a huge black eye (no pun intended) for Flyers and Comcast. People would have asked them wtf they were dragging their feet for.
They had no choice under the circumstances as a business entity.
I personally think a reasonable course of action would be to have a discussion and then a quiet reinstatement. |

Stu Nahan, among other such minor organization employees, is included; Kate Smith. IMO, is both a part of Flyers Family, and Flyers History... and in a sense, also a member if the Cups Legacy Honor Roll, and beyond.
Anyway, she was included in prior editions; why suddenly change inclusion but for Cancel Culture... Never would have happened in Mr. Snider's Flyers. - ForeverFlyer16
Paul Robison , Kate Smiths signing parter a lot was a African American singer who sang Old Man River I think. Some of the lyrics in songs that Kate Smith sang are now being used to make her out to be racist. Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer offends people also.
Things in the 30’s, 40’s , were different obviously. No need to punish a dead singer for something that maybe offended somebody (BLM-INC) 60 years ago. What’s next , renaming Abraham Lincoln high schools, oh wait never mind |

Had the Flyers held to their original intention of a full investigation... then actually had one, with the results released... and then dealt with it openly... most of us would feel better about a fair and detailed hearing haven taken place.
The underhanded manner in which they disgraced the lady with a shrowd cover followed by an at dark removal and hidden banishment... without any results of any investigation being released... reeked of the actions of a despicable dictatorship from another country. This is not what Flyers fans would expect from this organization... certainly not from one established by Mr. Snider.
I'm sorry... but this really hurt me as a long-time fan.
