Well if we didn’t want him back, that was dumb

I guess that line being so good at shot suppression didn’t matter to you or Adams

So apparently special teams don’t count,
and now neither does defense

Does being one of the best lines in the entire league in shot suppression matter, or not?

And they did that with heavy Def zone starts against the other teams’ best forwards every game

You’re clueless if u don’t see how impressive that was

I guess I’ll just leave it at that,
since I’m sure you’ll just ignore that & try to move the goalposts again

Pleasantly surprised by JJP. Scouts liked the pick, so I watched a bit of film, wasn't overly impressed. The Scouts were right, as usual.

He looks like a bit of a steal as a 2nd rounder right now.

Yeah he has upped his game. Looks like some decent prospects will be coming through the system over the next few years. Build a nice foundation through the system, a nice flow. Won't have to make trades to fill spots on your roster, that should have been filled from your system, but weren't any players there to do it. And will help with the cap.

Here is a whole article on the LOG line. I’m sure you’ll find your answer there. They had 35% o-zone starts and we’re one of the best lines in the entire league in shot suppression.

Does this answer your question ?

https://www.expectedbuffa...-fourth-lines-in-the-nhl/

- Pegullaville

Interesting read, thanks for providing!

1st, I'll agree that the LOG line did an admirable job with Possession Metrics, no doubt. As an offshoot of that, they suppressed shots against...because they possessed the puck more. No argument at all. That is what they were paid go do...Bravo, seriously.

However, with all that possession, they did generate shots of their own...unfortunately it largely went nowhere (higher XGF) because collectively they are very poor at converting those chances. For me, that is the rub...generally a waste of 15 minutes.

Now, as for did the article answer the question I posed to you on how did you stake the claim that the Log Line won many home games by shutting down the opposition's best line...
No...infact, it seems 5o give them some credit in that regard...but not what you postulated as fact...
"They were deployed as a shot suppression line to shut down the opponent and some nights the best line of the other team."

Had you positioned as such, and not exaggerated their impact, I would have remained quiet. But you opened yourself up to that question with your hypothesis based on shot suppression metrics.

I think we are all agreement that them playing 15 minutes was not ideal.

All I’m saying is that I understand the importance of having a line that can control possession and play defence.

When you are the home team you get last change. I made an inference that the LOG line getting the tough match ups and playing the tough minutes (35% o-zone starts) opened up the opportunities for the Eichel and Skinner lines for more offensive zone usage and more favourable matchups.

That resulted in a pretty good home ice record. When we were on the road and did not get to dictate the matchups we were not as successful.

I’m sure there are a multitude of factors that went into the home and away records but the ability to match up the LOG line against other teams top lines at home most likely played a role in that one way or the other.

If they played less,
we still would’ve lost.... true or false?

And as Pegulaville just showed above,
they were one of the best lines in the ENTIRE LEAGUE at shot suppression

It’s like u don’t understand there’s value in preventing goals
Good grief dude

- jdfitz77

See, here we go again.
Shot suppression is a good tactic to limit the likelihood of goals.
It doesn't necessarily result in less actual goals, rather less XGA.

Now again so as not to be misunderstood, if I want to reduce the number of goals against for my team...yes, I would want to reduce the XGA by suppressing shots...and more importantly work further to limit the mix of High and Medium Danger shots in the total number of shots allowed.
I might be very successful in that regard...have done everything I could and yet still be scored on by a Jack Eichel snap shot on a rush from the circle...cause he shot at a 24% rate that night.

Impossible to say because it didn't happen.

What I do know is that the philosophy of the roster build and usage was an abject failure and that's why they went in a different direction

That's not a bad thing though, a cheaper option is good, can always use a good shut down line.

Asplund has a reputation of being a pretty decent set-up guy too.
Having played a fair amount last year in his 1st season, he now needs to step-up.

Staal can play minutes commensurate with his talent level, which in turn will relegate the Larrys back to their proper place. The numbers suggest Larsson is vastly superior defensively to Eakin and Lazar.

I still think having an actual 2C will show the folly of relying on Larry hockey 15 minutes a game which got us to 25th place.

Time will tell. Larry can definitely run and stop the run. I dont think the Sabres are playing frank gore football anymore though

- jcragcrumple

And Staal and Eichel.

The Sabres defensemen are bad at defense. The Sabres goalies are bad at stopping the puck .

Larsson stopped other teams from getting opportunities in those 15 minutes

Any positive gains Staal is bringing offensively is being offset by losing Larsson and giving it back defensively

The offseason was really cool if you like household names. Not so great if you wanted actual improvements

We shall see boards, if everything gels in the top 6-9, puck hopefully won't be in are end as much, which will help.

Good teams don't play Larry lines for 14+ minutes a night. Now that we have a deeper roster no need for shut down hockey 14-15 minutes (25% of the game). They were good at their job 5v5, I think we all agree. Now that we have a legit and maybe pretty good second line, or three more balanced scoring lines there is no need. High energy 4th line that can tilt the ice...good teams have that.

That's absolutely preposterous.

Not only does adding Staal give us a 50 point (prorated to whatever, 37 point center), it's going to reinvigorate Skinner as well and make him look something like a real goal scorer.

Jesus christ the crying about Larry never ends. God speed in Arizona, Larry. Good luck with your Selke chase.

FFS people. We lost an 18 point center who sucked at the PK

You have all lost your damn minds. The guy was here since the first Obama term and never hit 20 points. Broads literally just said swapping Larsson for Staal is a net loss. I am all for advanced stats but this has entered the "chimera is a poor man's eichel" territory. Pure insanity.
