I want to scream or maybe throw up. We're just going to look for a 2C for 20 years, aren't we
- jcragcrumple

All the while it could've been Reinhart

Cozens has played Center all of his life and I do think he can play Center in the NHL when he gets used to the game.

It’s also hard to ignore that in the past two WJC he’s played on the wing and has looked very comfortable there.

Time will tell.

I’m certain though he’s going to be a fan favourite for a long time and is going to be a high end NHL forward even if it’s on the wing.

95% of the fans believe Risto is a defensive liability. I'll leave it there, as being in the lower 5% loses all credibility.

When did I say play Montour on his left?

Talk about embarassing, holy crap.

- IonSabres

I mean, it's just a fact that he's bad defensively at this point.

He also doesn't move the needle on offense.

He's legitimately a mediocre to bad defensemen

In 2-3 years he will be on PTO's or signing the league mins like Erik Gudbranson or Cody Ceci

I think the last paragraph is a little harsh.

Shelter him with o-zone starts and PP2 and he can get 30-35 points and be useful.

He’s just overpaid for his role and we misuse him.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Cozens remains on the wing at the NHL level and becomes that new age power forward.

Would open up trading Reinhart for our long term 2C next offseason.

Then you have Thompson, Quinn, Peterka, Olofsson all vying for the other top 6 RW option (assuming Hall is resigned and Skinner remains as our top 6 LW)

- Pegullaville

I'd rather have Cozens pan out at 2C, have Quinn be a Top 6 RW, and trade Reinhart for a 1RhD.
Olo, Routso, Tage, Peterka can all battle for the other Top 6 RW.
Trade friggin Risto and Montour

I’m not saying he won’t end up as a 2C, he very well could.

All I’m saying is that regardless he will be a top 6 high end forward.

He has all of the tools. He’s going to be great.

I had Cozens right ahead of Zegras in 2019 before the draft and although that might be a debate for the next 5-10 years I’m just happy we didn’t take Victor Olofsson (Cole Caufield)

Bigger schools have more money to spend on better coaching and higher profile games

If Allen went to a big school. He would’ve been way more nfl ready and most likely the first overall pick

Instead he was at Wyoming .... who the Frank plays there. (We know why he did) and had less coaching and less national media attention

So the QBs you named. Yes they came from no name schools. But the odds of them succeeding like they are is slim to none.

See Tyree Jackson. The Ex UB QB

- Sabretooth9

Texas tech, Cal, Louisville & Purdue are ALL “big” schools... VERY far from being “no names”

The argument was flawed before,
and your defense of it is ridiculous now

If it was about the $$$ that programs have,
then why aren’t we seeing QBs coming from Texas, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn state, Alabama, etc etc etc???

If it was about having a previously successful QB come through....
then tell me who the QB was at Cal after Rodgers?
Who came after Manning at Tennessee?
Who’s the QB at LSU right now?!
How about Oregon?

The only current schools that back up his claim & your defense is Clemson & Oklahoma, maybe Alabama
There’s a lot more that go against that....
A LOT

Lot of good C's in that draft...Dach, Cozens, Zegras, Turcotte and I forget the name if the Kid who tore his Achilles (edit, Krebs)...he is going to be a stud as well.
Some excellent talent coming into the league...let's hope Quinn turns out, otherwise we will lament Rossi for years.

It's been awhile, but from what I remember they started off strong and then faded once teams figured Pilut out...i.e. jump on him quick. I seem to remember Pilut being good for Risto, not necessarily the other way around...but w/e.

Getting up the ice faster is valid, but occurs after one actually defensively stops the play and begins the transition game...so, while I see that being a benefit in anyone's game, it doesn't help with the actual defending if you get my point there. I'd rather have a defensively strong player partnered with him. Let Miller play bigger minutes and Risto less...around 18 min a night would be great.

Better yet, trade Risto and Montour, use the $9m to acquire a stud (don't need to spend all of it, probably 50%)

- IonSabres

Well obviously this is assuming that Risto isn’t traded

And we don’t have a “defensively strong” guy to partner with Dahlin.... do we?

Point is that Risto is gonna play a lot of minutes no matter what
So what’s the best way to make him more effective?
Playing him Dahlin seems like a reasonable idea to at least try out

Dude... you pump up Girgs WAY more than Homie does Reinhart
And Reinhart is exponentially better than Girgs

- jdfitz77

Dude - I'm kinda kidding around with girgs. Homie is in love with sam. Cute lover nickname and all.

I like try hard guys. Gurgs also fits the long term sabre that I've probably seen play 200 times. Loyalty still matters to me. I like that he chose to stay in buffalo. Seems like a nice guy off the ice, although I have never met him.

Girgs absolutely outplayed his last contract. He was an actual contributor to the scoring above and beyond any expectations.
5th in goal scoring, 2 less than 9 million $ skinner.

But girgs is maybe overpaid by a 1/2 million. Skinner possibly 3 or 4 million overpaid for the longest contract on the team. He was a ufa and buffatax b.s.

I think everyone is gonna really like him again, and act like he's suddenly changed his game or is miraculously just started playing good again. We need to start winning. He is a buffalo guy. Kyle Williams lite. (Really lite)

He had a good year, it's an interesting signing that seems like a contract with the kracken expansion questions ahead. Him or tage in my opinion end up in Seattle when it should be skinner after last season.

I think it’s just tiring to see a guy who’s obviously in over his head as a #1 D man continually put in that role year after year while his trade value plummets.

He was worth a 24 year old Taylor Hall when Murray was GM. He apparently was worth Ehlers last year. I don’t think he’s worth much now

- sbroads24

We didn’t have a “#1” defenseman to play in that role though
U think any of the defensemen we’ve had over the years would’ve been any better?
Doubtful imo, VERY doubtful
Especially considering how crappy our team has been overall

My top 10 was

Hughes
Kakko
Turcotte
Byram
Dach
Cozens
Zegras
Newhook
Krebs
Boldy.

Turcotte looks like a whiff on my end there. Cozens and Zegras have looked a lot better.

Newhook and Krebs falling to 16 and 17 was a joke. Sakic was probably laughing when he made that pick when Newhook fell that far

I liked Girgs when u guys were all saying he should be waived to Rochester along with Okposo & Larsson

But u gotta expect to be called out when u like “try hard” 4th liners and call out other ppl for liking good top6 players
Come on now

Actually I disagree. They are doing better than I thought they would this year.

The defense is actually good.

Dwayne Haskins was a joke of a draft pick. Which Ron Rivera obviously didn’t draft

Rivera is turning that team around. I guess that’s my point

- Sabretooth9

they are missing a josh allen

if they get another haskins, all the good is for nothing

I think Rivera is the kinda guy that can actually build that team up though
And Snyder has obviously given over control to him

Another factor in Rivera’s favor is that this division blows & is totally up for grabs
It’s not quite the climb like whoever takes over the Jets will have (for example)

It's been tried by every coach, so sure why not.
Maybe the 4th guy will perform magic. Not.
Miller actually played the best with him later in the season.

Risto isn't a 1st pairing guy, playing him as such has been proven to he detrimental to the team.

This is the season to trade him out. With Dahlin and Joker coming due, they simply can't afford to carry his defensive lapses around anymore and stop wedging him into the lineup where he doesn't fit.
