YUGE.

"Casey Nelson has reportedly opted out of the 2020-21 season, according to TSN's Darren Dreger. Nelson signed a one-year, $700,000 deal with Buffalo on Oct. 22 after he spent the 2019-20 season with the Rochester Americans of the AHL. He notched four goals and 12 points in 48 games with the Sabres' top minor-league affiliate. Nelson earned one goal and five assists in 38 appearances with Buffalo during the 2018-19 campaign"

quinn gets an empty netter as canada wins 3-1

nice to know they trust his 2 way game to put him on the ice when they need to hold the lead

Cozens also had a really nice assist on Canada’s 2nd goal.

Quinn and cozens had good games too.

Team Canada USA and this world junior tournament this year has tons of good players ..... but missing that one great amazing Eichel / Mcdavid type player that takes it over.

Okay this is getting ridiculous, 100% cap circumvention and the NHL should step in but it's a Busch league and will look the other way. Just like they do with Bettman's Parkinson's disease. Seriously, he shakes more than a gay guy shakes his own wiener after peeing.

I think the opposite. Instead of crying, stomping your feet and screaming "not fair" like a spoiled toddler, be one of the smart teams and use it to your advantage.

And the notion that the NHL is the only league where teams get "creative" to stay cap compliant is laughable.

The NHL is the only league with both guaranteed contracts - and - a "hard cap" (no luxury cap). I use hard cap in quotes purposefully as LTIR is gamed to be a sort of out. NFL can restructure contracts; MLB + NBA has a luxury tax system.

The NHL is behind on implementing the latter. It would increase revenues, subsidize losses for the have-nots and eliminate the need for these stupid LTIR games.

The NHL LTIR system has all of the disadvantages of a luxury tax system with none of the benefits

127 yards rushing for Indy

20 yards for Pitt

I’m thoroughly confused

- sbroads24

Well you don't have to run the ball when every time a Indy DB coughed on a Pitt WR they threw a flag.

They took on an additional $4M to add to the $3.3M they gave up in Coburn and Paquette to put all $7M+ on LTIR to make space for all their players.

It's a joke.

Not sure people are surprised. When everyone was saying Tampa would need to trade one of their good players I said they would just do this

And that may all be true. However, my point is that teams will always be finding ways to push the boundaries no matter what the system.

Yeah, the NHL just can't figure out how to weaponize the wealth inequality of their franchises for the benefit of every club by adopting the luxury tax. I dont get it. But a lot of things the NHL does make no sense to me.

in many ways they have to be more creative due to enforcing the entire signed contract

the nfl, a 5 year contract means nothing, team can get out in a year if structured correctly

1- u b!tch about the refs constantly, yawn
2- Ben clearly made plays all 2nd half to lead them back for the win
He might not be what he was, but he’s not exactly “done” either

It’s ok to admit when u were wrong....
not that big of a deal

- jdfitz77

The refereeing was absolutely horrible. They handed the Steelers that game.

Oh my, is he a bad man.

Toronto did it last year...?

Seems like a different team does it every offseason.

They should go with the luxury tax approach and stop with the fake cap nonsense.

- kingcong39

What did Toronto do that was anything close.

Toronto's move to get them under the cap cost them a 1st. There was no injury/surgery/timing shenanigans.

You might not like LTIR but using it is not nearly the same thing that Tampa did.

You’re probably right.

But they were down, and came back, because of the QB.

They won’t have comebacks like that with a below average QB

- sbroads24

The comeback was largely due to lopsided calls that were, at best, questionable. Not only were the Colts flagged over and over again, but Pittsburgh also went unpenalized at key moments (I did see one so-so call against Pittsburgh)

Roethlisberger was not all that impressive, even in the second half. I think there are at least 4 teams that would get by Pittsburgh pretty easily from what I saw yesterday.

Your team didn't trade for David Clarkson's contract to create additional LTIR space to be able to sign Marner?

Edit: the question is open to all for input...feel free.

Jcrags, serious question as I don't follow basketball nor baseball...
how does a Luxury Tax system increase revenues?
Also, my rather uneducated view is that the system creates a league of Haves and Havenots financially and renders Havenots as a minor league development team for the Haves.

the small market owners that do not spend money, get a fat check from the yanks and other big spending clubs

"On December 2 in each contract year the Commissioner's Office notifies every team that exceeded the tax threshold that they must pay their tax by January 21 of the following calendar year. The Commissioner's Office then redistributes this money in a standard manner. The first $13 million will be used to defray clubs' funding obligations under the MLB Players Benefits Agreements. Of the remaining sum, 50% of the remaining proceeds collected for each Contract Year, with accrued interest, will be used to fund player compensation as described in the MLB Players Benefits Plan Agreements and the other 50% shall be distributed to clubs that did not exceed the Base Tax Threshold in that Contract Year"

I think clubs weaponizing LTIR to exceed the cap already creates a system of haves and have-nots. Legalizing it via a luxury tax just puts money in the have-nots pockets (see homie's post)
