Why can't they just have a 23 man roster as they normally would with normal implications and the extra players plus the taxi squad don't count against the cap. - manvanfan

Yeah, I turned it back to hockey.
Teams on the upswing in the AFC are the Dolphins, Bills, Browns. In the NFC that Washington front 7 is unreal. Aside from that Rhule and Judge look like good hires.
Edit: than X pick yesterday was unreal, 9 on the season. - golfingsince
Giants D is good & O is without Shaquon. |

Because then teams would be able to get out from under terrible contracts without penalty. |

I still haven't figured out why they want an expanded roster of 26 players and a taxi-squad.
I can only come up with the 2 different groups will have different rules. |

I wonder how waivers will work with the 2 week quarantine |

Condensed schedule eg injuries & players not needing quarantine are readily available. |

Browns here. Close call imo |

I get that, part why though do they have 2 tiers of extras, players 24-26 & the 4 player taxi squad.
Why not just a 7 player taxi squad?
It has to be that they will be calculated towards the cap differently, or not counted towards the cap. |

I think the taxi squad won't travel with the team but the expanded roster will |

That’s what the taxi squad is for. Players who would normally be with the AHL affiliate that stay in Canada instead.
If a player was injured, say Myers, then a taxi squad player could be called up as a reserve and a reserve would step into the lineup. They would then likely be able to call up another player from Utica who would need to quarantine. But as Carol notes in her blog, there seems to be a special treatment for athletes who test negative after (5?) days. |

I mean if a team was to claim a waiver wire player.... or is there no waiver wire this year?
If Tampa waived a player that the Canucks claimed, would he not go on the payroll until he's cleared quarantine? That's what I was wondering. |

Ok, when Boeser returned. Can you shut the (frank) up now? - boonerbuck
Well no, cause that kinda makes your whole point irrelevant. When Toffoli returned, Boeser stayed on the top line. Same thing. |

It is.... I imagine they are still working on the answers.
Quick question, I notice you double posted 5 minutes apart, how did you do this, extra brain fat or extra interesting question?
They have to keep waivers, all the waiver eligible players need to get sent down and exposed to play in the AHL.
I would imagine there's some sort of free time while they're in quarantine before they got added to the cap roster |

They could, but I am sure they have to look at precedence being set and how teams abuse this taxi-squad set-up.
As an example, Canucks could bury, Loui Beagle, Sutter Roussel Baertschi on the 24-30 player roster and sign Hamonic, Hoffman, Brassard, Vatanen.
This would be a circumvention of the cap that the NHL claims they are opposed to, hence the Luongo recapture, but nothing done about buying LTIR contracts.(hypocrites) - Reubenkincade
Maybe only players that you will be able to fit under the cap?
(frank), I've got so many ideas but all have a small glitch.
Really they could sign all those players, just need to sign them for under 1.075M per season.
Ferland goes on LTIR, Canucks have 2M in cap space with 1 regular spot in the 23 needed. The other taxi squad can just not count until they are "called up". By not count I don't mean burying the whole of their contracts. Team needs to still be cap compliant at the start of the season, with their 23 man roster.
Only problem would be if a player who makes Less than the 1.075M goes down and Canucks have to call up a player from taxi squad who makes more. Wouldn't "have to" call someone up. You can run with 22 man roster. Only 20 players are needed nightly.
Effectively, Canucks could bury Le, Sutter, Baertschi, Benn to save themselves 4.3M and replace them with cheaper contracts to save a possible 1.8M more in cap space to sign someone else. |
