What does that have to do with utilizing the draft
- Pacificgem

You are nowhere near as good at this when you don't have a couple of Leaf's fans in here backing you up. I'll wait if you want to go grab a couple...

You keep blending two issues because you can’t win the initial debate

The Leafs did a good job of utilizing the draft during their rebuild window/

come on, that was hardly during their rebuild. Contending teams trade first round picks like candy.

Obviously poor management decision trading a first (13th pick) away to get rid of Marleau, or even sign him in the first place, they did recoup the 15th overall pick by trading Kapanen though.

How is TO a contender? Playoff contender, yes (built for the regular season). Cup contender, not a chance (no heart, leaders are mot committed to the details)

Simply because 100 plus point teams management most likely feel like they’re a contender for the Cup, so they trade first round picks to help their team.

They’re poorly managed, you’re not telling anyone anything they don’t know, however, if we focus on their rebuild years, they utilized the draft very well and they got lucky to win the first overall.

Ya, it’s just to bad TO Mgmt didn’t bring in some vets to teach their entitled superstars how to play the game properly 😉

When you finish with 100+ points you’re contending, at least in those teams eyes, whether you agree or not. The Canucks just traded a first round pick after finishing in the bottom half of the league, where’s your criticism of Benning?
- Pacificgem

By that logic, the Canucks’ 101 point season in 2014-15 made them contenders. Further to that logic why would they not then trade draft picks to enhance their “contender” status? And they only traded second round picks, not first rounders

It’s easy, Boston, Tampa, Carolina, Toronto, NYI, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Blues, all traded first round picks in the past two seasons to try and win it all. Two of those teams are geniuses and the other six are idiots

OK well as long as you accept that TO is the latter and their rebuild genius is a myth then I agree 👍

Aidan McDonough gets a secondary assist for his first point of the year.

I'm not sure what Northeastern is doing though. He's the best shooter team has and for some reason, he's being asked to be a play maker. On the opposite side then last year too.

It was a "tank" rebuild that's why it went wrong. Deplete your team to nothing and that's what happens.

"re-tooling" is a better rebuild.

I'd say Benning did a better job when he traded his first to make the playoffs. Obviously...

It’s been proven to be both successful and unsuccessful. The full blown tank.

I'd take either over Dubas.
