OJ's closing in fast according to JB.
- VanHockeyGuy

I have hopes that he will be the minute-munching all-situations defenseman this team needs.

Where do you place the 2nd best defenseman of all time Lidstrom?
- Reubenkincade

Outside the top eight.

I agree with this. Gordie Howe is so (frank)ing overrated.

He’d mop the ice with Jagr’s do.
Jagr would whimper...

Great player for sure, but he didn’t transcend the game like Bobby Orr did, Lidstrom is in the Ray Bourque category.

Orr also ragged the puck & fought.

But that’s the problem, Gordie fits the old school, hard nosed, Canadian hockey player ideal. Elbows up, full steam ahead, and seemed to go on forever.

But there are dozens of NHL players through history that were far more skilled at the game than Gordie ever was.

TBH, one hit from a modern day pro hockey player and ole Gordie would be a puddle of broken bones and blood. Two completely different species between old school players and modern day athletes.

Yup, which is why he will always be in the top 3 of all time conversation.

Hello there,

The new blog starts out with Jim Benning getting us ready to see Loui Eriksson return next season, and ends up with a whole whack of nostalgia.

Head on over, if you please...

100%. I think there’s a Burke/twins story about Stefan going first. I believe Burkie knew he was going first, would be a bust, and worked that to his advantage getting picks 2 and 3.
- bloatedmosquito

I don't think so.
Just heard a podcast with Burkie talking about how he was pretty high on Stefan and actually tried to get the top 3 picks in the draft.
Stefan apparently had some concussion issues that derailed his career.

Will Jack Hughes go down as one of the worst 1st overall NHL picks ever?
- Pacificgem

Not likely, I still think he's gonna light it up.

Yak is probably right there.

Never said they were.

But at 71 games played when COVID-1984 hit they were the best CDN team in the country at 83 pts and trending up. With the two best players in the league on that club it's only a matter of time be fore it all breaks. Yes they need to clean up the D and goaltending a bit but most clubs have that issue lol.

Leafs improved their D a bit and if andersson can get his sh!t together at seasons end they will be right there...just too much firepower on that club up front. I have the Oilers Leafs 1-2 or vice versa and CGY VAN at 3-4.

Until either of them learn to play a 200 foot game they aren't gonna will anything. I agree either of them could be president cup winners, but both teams could also miss the playoffs. I see them as the hodz of teams. Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver and Montreal are more Podz, less upside but a higher floor.

Wayner had a six year head start on Mario and the goaltending was atrocious in the early 80’s. Not to mention Gretzky started his career with five HHOF players while Lemieux had to wait several years before the Penguins surrounded him with that kind of talent.

At the end of the day you’re talking about two of the four best players to ever play the game, along with Bobby Orr and Eric Lindros.
