It’s astounding how people either completely misunderstand the words they use or want to throw out the study of history. An analogy is not an equivalency. It doesn’t suggest Trump is anywhere near as bad as Hitler, but it does suggest there is value in studying the commonalities: nationalistic, racist, anti democratic, sexist, end up crazed in bunker, etc. History is our friend.

In my mind, using a term like Orange Hitler or Mango Mussolini is a joking reference to these similarities. My question to Winsix was whether anybody really believed that someone using the term thought they were equivalent. You answered something completely different.

I thought the ref did a terrible job in that fight. Jones was holding Tyson's arms for the majority of the fight. Tyson looked to be in much better shape.

It's hard to explain and very personal, let's just say that my dad's life was greatly diminished, childhood robbed, family wealth taken away, his father and grandfather were both murdered(he witnessed their deaths as a young boy) He saw things that no one should see. It's not something I joke about.

I completely agree with you in a couple of points and disagree on some that I’ll try to explain and then drop it.

I agree that the weight of these issues and comparisons are far beyond what can be discussed here but they are important issues and comparisons that do need to be discussed.

I also agree that I could never begin to understand the sentiments that Jews feel about the Holocaust. I remember talking to the father of a friend who described what he went through and how he felt losing his whole family. He only told me this because he was disowning his son for marrying outside the faith. So yeah, that’s way beyond my scope of feeling but it doesn’t negate what I learned about the rise of Naziism in my studies. Those are different things.

Comparing and contrasting is central to learning. We talk about Trump and Nixon, not because they’re the same but so we can learn from the previous impeachment process. We talk about the 1918 flu epidemic even though our knowledge of public health systems have advanced so we can understand how viruses spread.

And we talk about Trump and fascist and nationalist leaders so we can understand his nationalist, anti democratic tendencies. Hitler was a lot of things, but he was also the leader of a specific political movement that came to power in turbulent times. Understanding that movement and any similarities to today is important.

Lastly, I agree that there is probably a lot of glib use of these terms by people who don’t understand or care about history and I’m with you completely there.

I appreciate it winsie. My gf's grandfather is a Holocaust survivor and most of his family were murdered by the nazis. I didn't grasp the otherness Jews feel in our society before knowing her. I appreciate hearing your perspective on the use of these terms.

My cat is responsible for a lot of deaths, but most of them were birds and mice. Although I pay other people to kill fish, poultry and livestock and put them in a can for him to eat later. I can't stroke his fur and not be aware of the blood dripping from hands. He just loves killing so much. It's the only thing he understands. That and belly rubs and naps.

Truth is my previous post lashed out at you out of envy for picking quite possibly the best cat name ever. As the husband of a Chinese woman and father of two half Chinese children I feel comfortable speaking for over 1 billion people and advising you to go for it.
