Comparing Trump to Hitler is completely appropriate and important. That is different than equating them. Nobody is saying that Trump is responsible for the death of 6 million Jews.

Trump and Hitler are both ethno nationalists. They share characteristics in approaches and language and understanding those shared characteristics, understanding and comparing the economic and social forces in the 30's to those today is important.

I would say that we all have a responsibility to pay very close attention to autocratic and anti-democratic, racist politicians like Trump. Using a term like Orange Hitler isn't offensive. It's mostly a joke, but beyond that it's a reminder of an ugly path that is easier than many people think to follow.

There are some similarities in actions and the beliefs, but unless you have direct decendants - that were profoundly affected - you cannot understand why the comparison is not welcome by many.
