Amateur scouts have the toughest jobs in hockey.

GM’s mostly sit there and do nothing because they are too risk averse. Most GM’s when they do eventually do something do something stupid.

Joe Sakic is the exception.

Julian Brisebois showed some real stones this year too and finished the job Yzerkan started.

85% of GM’s are replacement level

- Pegullaville

Yup. All of this

Chirelli and Rutherford have a combined 4 cups and have made some of the most ridiculous moves I’ve ever seen.
- Pegullaville

And will continue to get jobs because of those cups despite the other failures

Well that is one view I guess.

But when there are only 32 jobs in the most competitive, cut throat environment in the world, I suspect none of us have a clue about what all is involved, and to ascertain these guys are all virtual idiots probably speaks for itself.

Adams came into a tough spot, with who him and Krueger brought in and signed, they obviously gave themselves leeway to build the team they want. There's some good talent here, with a few tweaks they could be a solid team. Intrigues me on what is gonna happen over the next few years.
Especially if some of these prospects that we will be seeing start working out. We are finally to that point well with decent drafting, that we can keep a flow of prospects through the system, it will help us, really haven't had that the last few years. Wouldn't have had to trade for or sign some of the players we did if we had that flow. That's why I am so hard on TM, he devastated are system. Yeah you made trades for some good players, but you traded so much away to get them that you had no pieces to put around them for the team to get better.

Did it take a mastermind to think it was a good idea to sign Hall ? I think that is a decision anyone on here could make.

Anyone with a $5 patreon subscription to Evolving wild could have told you that signing Reider and Eakin were a terrible idea.

How many people were thrilled we gave Girgenons that term ?

I think 80% of hockey Twitter would have taken Marco Rossi top 5 never mind at 8 when we passed on him.

Now if Jack Quinn pans out and is a legitimate 35-40 goal scorer in his prime then I’ll acknowledge that Adams made a good decision on here that many few would have and give him a boatload of credit and eat my humble pie.

This team is better this year on paper than last year, Eakin is a solid vet that's been through a few Wars, if we get anything like a few years ago it's a decent signing. Rieder is a 13th or he might not even make the team. As for the draft, well I hope Quinn works out, have read some good things on him recently. Definitely wasn't my first choice, if you're passing on Rossi I would have taken Lundell. Will see what happens, I hope he's a GM that surprises, cause I think with 2 more tweaks this could be a decent hockey team.

it was always going to be.

Either one of us could’ve been the GM and we’d still have Hall.

The moves Adams made (Staal, Hall) are no brainers

The moves that take skill or are ones he’d have to make year over year have been underwhelming

He bungled the bottom 6 and did squat about D or G

Staal is a no-brainer but the last guy spent 2 years not doing it. At least give Adams credit for acquiring a center. C'monnnnnn.

I know Staal's basically suffering from Alzheimer's so it doesn't count but still

That is fair I certainly did not expect him to get Staal for Mojo so I give him credit there as well.

Not sure what Guerin was thinking there though.

I will wait and see how the next month goes, once a start up date is known, gonna be a flurry of moves, Adams and Krueger can still improve this team. Will see

Jim Benning is a bad GM, he put the Canucks into cap hell because he overpaid a bunch of bottom 6 NHL’ers and sub optimal d-men.

At the professional level Benning has made one good move the entire time he’s been there and that was the J.T. Miller trade (even that at the time raised a lot of eyebrows because of the price paid) however it has definitely worked out for the Canucks.

How much credit does Jim Benning get for doing what Judd Brackett told him at the draft table to select Virtanen, Boeser, Pettersson, Hughes, Juolevi, Demko ? He inherited Horvat from Gillis’ last draft.

A GM is as good as his amateur scouting department for the most part. Benning’s moves at the professional level though are doing a pretty good job of screwing up a wet dream though.

I give him props for that. But again, what GM, or homeless fan wouldn’t have accepted that deal? Did he hypnotize Guerin?

Staal and Hall are slam dunk gimme’s. Those aren’t moves that are repeatable. You aren’t going to run into former teammates from 15 years ago to agree to come here, or top UFA’s to sign 1 year deals because they love the coach year over year.

The moves that were made, that are yearly decisions like Girgensons, Eakin, letting Kahun walk, drafting the 13-15th best prospect 8th overall are moves he will make annually and he botched them

So you're not going to give him credit for the moves you like but you're going to tar and feather him for the moves you don't. I didn't want Girgensons back, and I would have taken Soderberg over Eakin 8 days a week, but if we're just not gonna give him credit for the good things then of course everything looks awful

He gets full credit for Staal. That was a solid trade and amazing value.

But it was also a bandaid on a gunshot if Cozens isn’t a 2C at the age of 20 next season.

Again, would you or I not make that deal?

Is it possible that because we are all super fans, and being the GM of an NHL team would be a pretty awesome job, that we idolize these people and therefore overestimate their level of intelligence ?

For any business to succeed they need to acquire the best human capital they can on the budget that they have.

Taylor Hall signed in Buffalo because of his relationship with the coach and because of Jack Eichel (whom my 9 year old cousin even would have selected in the 2015 draft with the 2nd overall pick it was that obvious)

Trust me, im not overestimating the intelligence level of Rutherford, Guerin and Botterill. They're morons. Guerin and Botterill didn't fall far from the Rutherford moron tree

Taylor Hall signed here because he loved the guy who was hired by the last idiot who was the Sabres GM.

Murray was an idiot, Botts was an educated idiot, Adams seems like a nice guy idiot.

I’m a hockeybuzz idiot and no one should take me seriously

Shero was a moron too for the most part and the Penguins are the most successful franchise of the past 15 years.

Also a moron. Ray Shero wasted 5 years of Crosby and Malkin before being fired. He got 1 cup. They could have been the Patriots of the NHL.

Yet we have a core of Eichel, Dahlin, Joker, Cozens, Skinner, Reinhart, and Quinn (hopefully).

Now as long as Adams gets Reinhart done on a reasonable deal and does not give out any crazy money long term deals to anyone else to restrict our long term cap flexibility the Sabres should have a very good decade.

We need a goalie, and to shuffle the chairs on the defence and move a RHD out for a LHD.

I think everyone on here for the most part can agree on that and it’s not any high level thinking.
