You talking about the owners? The players? Both? - Scabeh
both
Owners are dumb for making a deal this summer and trying to reopen it.
Players are dumb for being irate and clutching pearls about it expecting it would be different this time.
Also, they are both dumb for waiting this long before preparing next season.
The NHL piss me off with their constant stupid labor issues. |

Agreed.
The problems of millionaires about how much they'll get paid to play a game while people all around them are dying/losing their job/going bankrupt. Who gives a poop really?
There's no way they don't figure it out in the end anyway, both the league and the players can't afford to spend a whole year not playing. |

In my eyes the league is to blame on this one, no two ways about it. Whether or not it resonates with the average Joe or whether people care about millionaires complaining doesn't matter. The league pushed the CBA stuff when they did, they made an agreement, they initiated the discussions themselves to make the agreement, any lack of foresight is on the league only. This is bargaining without good faith and it leads to more issues down the road. (frank) the next time the CBA is up the players will make it hurt |

i honestly haven't looked into any of this enough to voice an opinion. i just want to watch hockey asap. i miss just popping on the nhl live thing and bouncing around watching games. i miss the flyers. i miss secretly watching habs games while i read what you guys are saying about it. it's only been a month and a half or something but i need hockey games to watch. or even just to be on in the background while i'm doing stuff. |

but is "deferred money" such a huge problem for players?

Completely agree and I'd imagine that's how most fans feel. I actually meant to respond to Pat's post calling them spoiled brats but accidently clicked on yours |

Beyond the time value of money which in this stock market could be argued to be over $100k per $1m per year, a simple counter argument: The league already proposed and agreed to different rules. Why should the players have to give anything? If the players do give anything what's to stop the league from doing it again? If the league can just decide to change rules of a recently signed CBA that they designed, proposed and agreed to, why can't the players? It's weird how we idolize players but when they fight for what they deserve when you look at polls, fans poop all over them |

yes but these are "exceptional times", and while the CBA is still valid, if deferring money to later means that players will receive less money for now so that they can play in January, but recover said money when things come back to "normal", then I don't see the huge issue. unless I'm missing something and players are actually losing a ton of money while the league isn't doing any compromises...?

Initial agreement was done on the base of a 82 games season with people in the stands. It's not that anymore. Things evolve quickly.
Like you said, they will figure it out in the end. I just don't care for agents like Allan Walsh who negotiate on social media and always tries to get the general public's sympathy. |

I dunno man, I think the majority of the owners can afford to wait and not pay, longer than the majority of the players can wait and not get paid. |

The league made the deal during Covid. Their lack of foresight is their issue. If I sold a home 6 months ago and found out today it's worth 20-30% more I can't ask for a do over and have them send me money. The league isn't offering anything back to the players for this delay in receiving their money, no interest on their money, just saying take less money because we are asking you to. Can you honestly tell me if you were in that position you'd just say no biggie, let's play? It's easy for us to say just do it and get back to playing because it's not our money, our family's livelihoods, our ability to produce generational wealth on the line. It's easy for us to say as we're just fans who want to watch puck. Pretending it should be as easy for the players is unfair to them and ignores the reality of how the situation came to be |

I think 10 or less owners can afford to wait. Even then think of a team like the Leafs who has money, no hockey means Rogers and TSN (the majority owners of the Leafs) need to fill a lot of content with less desirable media and will end up hurting more. You bargain dishonestly and that poop will eventually bite you in the ass |
