I remember Cpt. A few of us were especially shocked with the Leo deal. I think pretty much the entire NHL was floored. Even if Covid did not happen and the Cap was going up every year, those deals still made no sense. Both players should not have gotten more than 2 years and if they leave they are replaceable.

Cap was supposed to go up 3 to 5 million this year pre COVID so that at least a 6 million dollar swing Ses. It has made a huge difference for every team in the league.
Most teams are dealing with Cap issues because of it and it is exaggerating the cap issue on teams who were in cap hell before the Virus. It is also taking away the options of trading to teams with cap room because they don’t know where they are financially in the next year.
The Leo deal didn’t put the Islanders in Cap trouble.
The Islanders don’t need to be Cap compliant until the first day of the season and we don’t even know when that will be. Rest assured Lou and Pelligrini will have the Islanders Cap compliant with most of the team signed but Toews.

Holy poop we make the ECF in two years and this thread still belly aches about a couple depth deals (frank)!

You cannot count on the Cap going up every year 7 and you need to make sure you are managing the Cap better. The Leo and Hickey deals were bad deals whether it was Lou, Billy Torrey, or Scotty Bowman. It's silly to defend these deals or make excuses. I have no doubt the Isles will get Barzal signed and it's great they made the ECF but they will have very little room to add offense to this team to get them past a team like Tampa.

The cap was going up and because of COVID it didn’t. I’m not defending the Leo deal but it isn’t the reason the Islanders or basically every team in the league is in cap trouble but say 4. Tampa lost for years until they added grit to their team. 3rd and 4th liners.

Isles still had Cap issues even if it was going up. It's easier to trade for and normally easier to sign 3rd and 4th liners. Tampa already had the talent part taken care of. Isles are still lacking in the talent department. It's much harder for the Isles to try to bring in that wing for Barzal.
