If I don’t want to get the vaccine, can I choose to still have my dentist install the government tracking device in a molar?
- Atomic Wedgie

Depends how many molars you have left? Russians have one ..Chinese another ...do you have any left unused?

What we're going to start hearing about now (more loudly) is vaccine nationalism. The rich countries are pre-purchasing by contract to ensure they get most/all of the early releases.

WHO/COVAX set up to ensure a balanced global release. Canada dumped a bunch of money into COVAX but then went out and locked up their own purchases. Mostly because China and the US refused to sign on to COVAX.

Pitting the feds global accountability against its national mandate.

- The Law

Yup. I'm also excited for the inevitable "the vaccine should be free" arguments in addition to the vaccine nationalism.

As in you're expecting regular people to pay for it or that the compagny making the money shouldn't make a profit from it?

The shingles vaccine cost the wife and I about $240 EACH, NOT COVERED.

2 shots each, 2 to 5 months apart.

I don't expect regular people to pay for it. I do expect governments to pay and for rich nations to help poor nations to secure a vaccine.

I was more referring to people who seem to think companies like Pfizer should just give things away for free because they are a rich company.

Yeah Shingles ain't covered in Quebec either. Though it's probably worth paying considering how painful that poop looks.

But Measles for example, are free when given to kids.

It's a tough one. Pfizer is a private enterprise, but they probably also shouldn't be able to charge whatever they want for the vaccine.

That debate has been going. The higher pricing 10-30$ per dose is "helping" rich countries get those pre-purchases. Gates/WHO/COVAX want universal $3 per dose.

Agreed.

There should be a reasonable profit margin, but they can't take people hostage like in some other cases we've seen.

Indeed....I mean, in general, if you're permitted to operate as a healthcare business, there's gotta be a limit to your profitability, especially if we as a society have decided that you can't hang a price tag on human life.

I imagine there was a price that was agreed to with countries like Canada/USA when the preorders were made. That will likely be the price charged throughout.

Could actually come down in the medium to long term assuming there is actual competition with Moderna and other suppliers.

That's why vaccination are not typically a rich companies game. Although they're making profit selling it at $3 but that profit is not going to move the price of stocks. You get $30 per dose and sell big volumes then you're flying high.

In the end (it's already happening) the price will be lower and the rich countries will spend millions to ensure the poor get vaccinated (and to ensure they the rich countries get to the front of the line).

It could be a long while before we see a competitive marketplace for a covid vaccine though.

Three or four companies isn't going to make a hell of a difference vs. one if you ask me.

Whole thing seems trivial.

I mean, I'm usually a fiscal hawk. But $10 -$30 per vaccine seems cheap (80- 240 billion cost for the entire world).

I mean, our budget deficit alone due to Covid is higher than the worldwide cost of the vaccine.

Agreed. It won't get too much noise. More noise about distribution equalities and the rich helping the poor pay the ~30 per dose. Canada seems to be taking the moderate approach of helping the poor via COVAX but also buying their own to ensure the safety of our own people (cough ...economy).

update ...yanks bought the largest pre-purchase at $37 per dose.

so far the pharma companies have been singing the right tune in terms of a price point for the vaccine. We'll see when push comes to shove.

Insurance companies have a price on human life. Depending on the company it's around 9 million bucks last I read.

I'm not talking necessarily life insurance companies. I'm talking about insurance companies and payouts for say an accident or work place incident.
