really like the work that the jays have done, shapkins has built a good team and a good prospect pool at the same time...they got a ton of hate after AA..hard to hate on them at the moment

Looking at that...If they were to trade for Lindor LGJ would be a good player to send the other way. |

Feels more like he was ahead 3-0 and then at 3-2 he just yelled "STOP THE GAMES!"
Then lost 3 to 4. |

The best part is that this list doesn't even include Orelvis Martinez. 17/18 yr old SS who Keith Law (no relation) believes may be the Jays top prospect very soon. |

To be honest, I wouldn't have Josi ahead of Matthews either. - mjones242
I agree with your bolded. Except for last season Panarin was incredible.
And in my opinion, Josi is the most overrated player in the league. |

I meant the lineup on BA doesn't include Martinez.
Law's list (on The Athletic) includes him at #4 and ya I have access to that. |

The more I look at there lineup now and over the next few years I wonder if they use their money in CF and pitching. If Lindor isn't a bidding war and if they are committed to getting payroll back up to 175m then go for it but if they're still working on some kind of budget I'm spending it on a starter and veteran CF (shorter term). |

Looks like things should be cleared up and ready for hockey very soon in Florida.
"When Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) needed a new mind to join the state’s team of data analysts, many of whom have been working to monitor the coronavirus pandemic, he turned to an unlikely candidate.
Last week, Kyle Lamb, a little-known sports blogger who moonlights as an anti-masker, announced he had been hired to do data analysis, “including but not limited to Covid-19 research,” for the governor of Florida." |

I think you are right... A top tier CF and another ace for the rotation and they'd be really, really good..

It's such a zany thought. There are 7 teams, maybe playing a 60 game season? That's 10 times against each other in a relatively short order.
I do a quick summary as:
Toronto: They are better than played last year, and got better on the back-end where they probably had the biggest weakness. Honestly, they are a weaker offensive tea, but hopefully more balanced. Assuming Andersen rebounds, they should be a top-2 team.
Edmonton: Got better forward depth which is good. Still need some more consistency in net. They still have 2 Hart trophy winners who haven't even hit their prime.
Calgary: Got Markstrom which initially I thought was great, but he wasn't substantially better than Talbot's performance. He's better, but numerically . . .it may not be enough to overcome the loss of Brodie and Hamonic with oft-injured Tanev as the replacement.
Vancouver: The young guys are getting better. Personally, I don't think that much of Holtby, so they'll go as far as Demko takes them. He might need some growing time, too.
Montreal: Probably made the best offseason moves by stabilizing the D with Edmundson, getting an actual backup, and adding some toughness up front in Anderson, and not losing TOO much offensive dynamic in doing so.
Winnipeg: Hellebuyck deserves a defense. DeMelo, Pionk and Morrissey are half of a good D. Another vezina season will help them, obviously, but if your hope is a vezina season, it's a poor strategy.
Ottawa: Matt Murray in net on a weak defensive team? What could go wrong? Who cares? This team isn't about this year. They have a lot of good young prospects who will probably start to show this year, but won't really be ready for 2-3 years. Just in time to have Matt Murray in net for 2 more years with $6.2M contract. |

My bias must be coming through with Montreal. I have seen a lot of people say that they are much improved...But I just don't see it.
Of course they have Price, so they can make the playoffs on him alone if he has a good year.

The concern with Ottawa - and I mean this in all seriousness - is Melnyk being a cheapskate. In long-term deals, they have Chabot at $8m and Matt Murray at $6.25m. You also have Colin White at $4.75M. I like Colin White just fine, but not $5m fine. He could be still be a 25 goal guy, I suppose. He's not been consistent. That's 25% of their cap and only one guy I'd like to keep in Chabot. Brady Tkachuk is up at the end of this year, and he'll be in the $7-$8 range, I would imagine. He's not Matthew, but he's fantastic at being an ass and is probably a 30 goal guy.
With the young guys who are going to emerge in the next little while - Brannstrom, Stutzle, Abramov, Formenton, Batherson, Sanderson, Thomson, Pinto . . . they may not all turn out, but more than half should - it raises the question. What is the real cap of the Ottawa Senators, since it's unlikely to be the same as the cap that the rest of the league is using? I mean, the good new is that they have them cheap for 3 years, ideally, but at some point the reckoning is coming where they want their pay, and you have a guy who won't want to pay them.
