I agree with all you mention, the article does have some merit. The basic premise of the article was that there is some combination of cost of the contract, ability to trade (NMC and NTC) and the percentage chance of the player actually being worth the contract. Doughty according to the Athletic had a Positive Value Probability of 0.4% on his long term $11M contract, plus exposing him to Seattle is not possible because of trade restrictions, this made his contract a real dog.
