But I just don't get it and it's not for a lack of trying. It's utterly impenetrable to me (though I don't "hate" him).

Which I find so fascinating -- how different people can be so passionate about music that I can't, for the life of me, comprehend (and vice versa, of course).

A simple walk through a CT or home hardware store would have uncovered the fraud.
