I think fear of being on the wrong side of the "base" is what drove the more moderate republicans into the closet.

Hopefully that group expands quickly once the results are final.

That might have happened if the election had been a clear repudiation of Trumpism but he exceeded his vote total from 2016. Moderate Republicans (whatever that means) are either going to have to grow a spine or wear a very ugly mark in history. This is especially true since it looks like they will control the Senate. McConnell has already signalled he won’t play ball in Biden Cabinet or judicial appointments. Biden signalled he wants to work with Republicans. Mitch is going to tell him to (frank) off.
