I would love to see a breakdown of NBA ownership vs. NHL ownership.

I know I'm the resident pessimist here, but I don't see a lot of NHL owners wanting to start the season earlier.

If you are going to lose money every game, 48 games sounds about right.

I think the return to play committee was just going to start meeting today.

Sooooo hockey.

Ryan Pulock at 5 x 2 can't make the Isles fans happy. Walks him straight to UFA in 18 months.

TB with crickets on their Cap issues ...

NBA players expected to agree to Dec 22 start date - December 1 for training camps. Does that trigger the NHL planning?

Is Boychuck headed to Robidas Island? They have $4M in cap space and Barzal is unsigned. I would imagine he's going to end up in the bridged $8M+ range . . . somewhere around Aho and Rantanen . . .

I think there's a good percentage of NHL team owners that don't really want to start the season without people in the stands.

Some probably do want to begin however, like most canadian teams.

I say most because well.... Ottawa still exists.

The big difference is the TV revenue for the NBA will help make the losses smaller.

I still haven't seen any analysis on the NHL revenue / expenses. Owners are losing money regardless on their fixed commitments. So the question is how does the revenue from playing games (tv, sponsors, etc...) match up to the expenses of playing games (salaries, travel, etc....).

You think that's a rough subject on hockey websites, oh boy (or girl, or whatever) you should see it on running websites.

It's a mine field, and every mine is packed solid with munitions and poop.

Just mention the name Caster Semenya, step back, and watch the chaos ensue.

I saw this todaym might play into the desicions

Driving a January start for the NHL is the ability to execute their national sponsor deals, including television.
Don’t forget the league, and the clubs will also get an injection of expansion money from Seattle early in 2021, that would help teams get through some tough times.

ESPN announced today they are cutting 300 staff.

I'm wondering if we are now approaching a turning point where professional sports suffer from a general loss of interest from the general public that they don't recover from.

They can drop 2 skaters if they needed (to get to 20) and that would get them another 2.15. Still doesn't seem to be enough unless Barzal does a 1 or 2 year deal.

My understanding is that Boychuk is still playing and so is Ladd. So I imagine trying hard to find a taker for one of them or maybe a Komarov or Leddy.

My prediction remains that there will be no AHL season, so each team will be allowed to carry a small taxi squad that will not affect the cap.

The genius of this move is it allows teams that are franked against the cap to only carry a "cap-roster" of 20 players at all times - so they don't have to make bad decisions to be cap compliant.

I did read that a some franchises were arguing to not go ahead with a season if there were no or limited fans because they would lose more than they would gain. Gary convinced them not playing at all would cost them more in the long run.

There’s also the wrinkle in the MOU that doesn’t stipulate that the player’s get a pro-rated 72% salary next year depending on the number of games. League says, yeah but you know what we meant..... Don Fehr says yeah but my name is Don Fehr

My favourite bible story is Two Kings, where 42 kids make fun of a guy for being bald, so God releases two female bears who kill the kids.

No, I'm not kidding.

Yes, please do tell that to Voltaire and Tumbles.

Also true about Voltaire ...he was anti-Semitic, taught that blacks were of a different humanity than whites ...and had a rather liberal view of sexuality for his time (somewhat counter to the original point).

To play devil's advocate here, all western thinkers of political philosophy prior to the 1950s were probably racist to one degree or another.

And your name is Gary Bettman, and both of our signatures are on the CBA that states that we get 72%.

I've always argued that in league work stoppages, the players should just give the owners whatever they want, because it's a guarantee that the owners will still find a way to frank themselves.
