Yes, but he'll be a UFA who's about to get his one single shot at landing a big money contract. Isles will have to compete with the open market and they'll pay a premium for him because of it. Not to mention the fact that you might also see Barzal sign a deal with the same or similar term and he's priority #1.

Listen, no complaints from me. It's great deal and we have two years before we really need to worry about the next one.

Hopefully he never gets to UFA. either extend him next summer or by the trade deadline during the 2021/2022 season.

"LTIR isn't going to help, not right away anyway, because it doesn't kick in until the season starts and they need to be cap-compliant by the end of training camp, if I recall. So yes, Ladd may ultimately go to LTIR, but it doesn't help them to get under the cap by the time they need to be."
cheif..

(still not allowing me to quote first page)..

I thought u were allowed to be 10% over the cap until the season starts..and then can put a player on LTIR right before the season begins to achieve that goal.

You are allowed to be 10% over the cap in the offseason but, I believe (and am trying to find the right answer) that you need to be cap-compliant by the end of training camp. So there will be a short gap between that and the beginning of the season (when you have to wait to put him on LTIR until) that it won't help the Islanders. Maybe it means sending down a few guys to make the numbers work until they can LTIR him, maybe Lou works out a trade...who knows.

edit:

One of our panel experts from a month ago projected three years, $7 million per for Barzal. Given how tight things are financially for the Isles, Barzal might be able to get that number for two years and have a faster track to a bigger payday. But keeping it below $7.5 to $8 million seems crucial for Lamoriello, since anything above that would require more than one contract be shed. If Barzal comes in at $7 million or lower, Lamoriello could conceivably put Ladd, Boychuk, Hickey and Komarov on waivers during training camp and gain $4.3 million in cap space by burying all four deals in the minors. Not ideal, but it’s possible with a lower AAV for Barzal.

Pulock will be a UFA at 28......I don't love it.....But Boychuk, Leddy and Hockey will be off the Cap same time.....
Dobson will be RFA.....If it looks like Dobson is poised to be top pairing guy, they could let Pulock walk then extend Mayfield for Less...and hope a a prospect is ready to take the #6 spot.

that Ryan Pulock has agreed to a two-year deal worth $5-million per, the #Isles now have just about $3.9-million in cap space and a second buyout window opening in 48 hours.

Only players who can be bought out are those with AAVs over $4-million.

This makes a lot of sense to me.. If Barzal takes a bridge deal then they will have the money to pay him too.. cap will go up and you will lose a ton of guys off the contracts. Wouldn't be surprised if he takes a 2 year deal too. They will have Leo, Cal, Leddy, Boychuk, Hickey, Pulock, and ross coming off.. My guess is you sign RP and let the rest walk. the following year they lose Ladd's and Varly's contracts coming off the books. Next year they need to sign Pelech, Sorokin, and Beau.. but I wouldn't be surprised if they end up moving Varly this year or over next summer if he continues to have a good year and Sorokin is as good as we hope.

My guess is that Varlamov will ultimately look like a pretty attractive expansion draft pick for Seattle. His NTC doesn't prevent exposure from happening. This, of course, hinges on Sorokin being seemingly-capable of being a full-time NHL starter...but if he does then I think Varlamov will be Seattle-bound.

Not sure how many other goalies will be out there that Seattle would want. Fleury will be older and make more money...can't imagine that Varly isn't the best of what's around, assuming he has another strong showing this season.
