News reports still affirming an 82-game schedule with training camps being 14 days long allowing for up to 35 players before roster trimming.

Also seeing other reports that if the season starts later than January 1, then the regular season could be reduced to 48-65 games.

If they start January 1st I suspect the shorter number of games will result in a slightly more compressed schedule, but I do not think it will be extremely compacted.

From the start of NHL training camp until the start of the AHL season I could see expanded rosters and a new short term formula for calculating the salary cap. Maybe they will only use the salaries of the 20 players on the ice in their most recent game (and it would adjust game to game, just like they do with the 22 or 23 man rosters).

Once the AHL camp opens the NHL roster size could return to 23 players, but they create a NHL/AHL "limbo" category. Let's say the Hawks have 23 players on their roster, they want to give Carpenter a rest. They move him off the roster, into "limbo / nonroster" category and call a player up from the AHL. Maybe they also change the waiver rules between NHL and AHL to make the movement easier.

Agreed cap needs to be based on 20 dressed for game day or 23 designated players. Then allowed to carry "X# practice squad."

They say there's a lot of crime in Chicago, but it's really condensed in certain areas

The survey included businesses on the west side of LA, which is the mostly upper middle/middle class. I don't think that crime is the #1 issue with businesses located in Highland Park, Northbrook, Glenview, Buffalo Grove, etc. etc.

For $2 mil that's not much of a problem

Is Ullmark/Hutton in Buffalo any better than the Hawks tandem? Bernier/Greiss might not be much better. You could also argue that Mrazek/Reimer is not better, they just have NHL games under their belt to prove they are not very good.

Hey Theo interesting blog you wrote. My prediction for how next seasons schedule will follow , will look like the 2012/13 season where the teams had a lockout and ensued was a shorter season.

Maybe you or someone else can answer this question for me? As im reading capfriendly it shows chicago with 5 million in cap space, however if strome resigns and seabrook and shaw play chicago will exceed their allotted cap space by almost 9 million?

If I'm correct then wouldn't we most likely see a core player possibly traded ?

I keep hearing rumors with kanes name ?

The total cap hit number on Capfriendly includes Shaw's and Seabrook's salaries, but does not include them on the 23 man roster. If they are healthy enough to play, they will fill roster spots 21 and 22, so the Hawks still have that 5M.

The players already agreed to play this year for 72% of their salary, a 10% deferral and a 20% escrow on the remaining 90%.

IMO, a serious sticking point in a reduced schedule scenario is if the players get a prorated salary based on the number of games played. So assuming a 50 game schedule instead of a full 82 games, that would be about 61% of the 72% or 44% of this year's player's contract value.

I have the feeling that the owners will push for the proration while the players feel that the 28% reduction already is enough of a give back.

my guess is they will not play a full season. wtih no fans in the stands owners would lose a ton each game. they want a short season and get to the playoofs just like MLB did. both those leagues need gate rev unlike the NFL or NBA.

They will play. People will complain and the rest of us will enjoy it for what it is.

If theres anybody who is overplayed, its Toews. Take him off the PK and have the lower line guys absorb those rough minutes. Kane sometimes gets double shifted on a lower line but thats nothing compared to being on PK, PP, extra d zone face-off short shifts, in addition to regular shifts at 1C. Keith has played better when his TOI is below 24 min or so.

Gangs of kids coming from south side have become even more brazen the past couple years. They steal from businesses and pedestrians. They orchestrate an accident with kids as lookouts, space fillers and steal a vehicle, often a cell phone too. They have been striking in river north especially. This is ongoing over ten years now. It is a very serious problem. Security will not allow kids inside the mcDonalds on the red line stop state and Chicago. Usually in a society the economic lesson is enough people have to get upset and rise up against the problem. That red line stop is a hub for people as they disperse into the city.

I certainly don’t agree with “defunding” the police - but the system isn’t working - and it goes beyond better training and reform and transparency (altho those are very important).

Community investment - education, healthcare, housing, businesses providing jobs - and a major rethinking and reformulation of how law enforcement functions - and the relationships between law enforcement and the community....

I don’t know what that all looks like - but we must all be part of the solution going forward.

I am with you on your points. Accountaility. Reality check should be it doesn't take enough power brokers, important people, people of money and stature, to be effected. There is a problem:at least reduce the quantity of crime by the punks. Stiff sentencing would also send a messagr.

It is a source of amazement to me that some Hawks fans continue to suggest acquiring players who could help the 2021 team but would not be a part of the long term rebuild. That is simply counterproductive to the stated objective - which is to build toward the future with young players. Winning in 2021 is not the primary objective, and yes, that almost certainly means losing seasons until the rebuild is closer to being complete. Accept that.

New blog! A look at challenging the Blackhawks youngsters to play in situations that they’re going to have to succeed in sooner or later in order to prove their worth in the NHL. Is that the best strategy during a youth movement?
