agree. I also don't see him being a regular for the flyers. Would love to be wrong though. |

Having to be on the nhl roster should prevent a claim. Starting in the nhl right away after missing all that time would not be in his best interest. |

Anyone else amused by the Flyers director of medical services sitting shoulder to shoulder and passing around a microphone for them all to spit on and hold close to their faces? That big dufus, Therien (sp?), can’t keep his nose or mouth in his mask at all. |

I would be shocked if someone claimed him. He hasn’t played consistent hockey in how long now and he barely has any NHL games under his belt. If it wasn’t a NHL roster spot it’d be a different story but you can’t carry this kid as your 7th or rely on him to stay in your lineup. He needs a stunt of solid, healthy hockey somewhere to prove himself. |

No, not sure where you got that from what I said. I'm saying that the director of medical services is not really being the best role model for COVID safety.
Edit: as we all know, masks help prevent the spread of the virus along with distancing. I'm not a medical professional, but I think I'm fairly safe to assume that even with a mask the virus could be spread to a microphone inches away from their faces (especially when the mask is not covering your nose or mouth.). |

Well, since none of them spoke in to the mic without their mask on, (and why the video was so annoying because I couldnt understand half of what they said) Im not sure what your issue is.

Do I really have to explain this? I thought it was funny. I was amused by it. My amusement came from the juxtaposition of the director of medical services for the flyers, on a medical related forum, not really following basic COVID safety practices. It's ironic. I thought it was funny. Yes, both he and Therrien are wearing masks. The masks, however, are not covering their noses (or in Therrien's case his nose and mouth). They are sitting shoulder to shoulder and passing back and forth the microphone that they are holding close to their faces and talking into.

Lew Morrison used to bartend at my local watering hole down in South Jersey. Cool, quite guy. Was still in rock shape. Once watched him pick up two drunks that started a fight. One in each hand and tossed them out the door onto the sidewalk. |

Even the cloth masks? Or just the N95s? - Sir_Robot_Farts
From what I gather:
The exact details are murky but the general trends that are emerging seem to suggest N95 are better than 2-3 ply surgical masks which are better than cloth. All confer some protection. (Exact numerical details are unknown. Some studies are 'floating around' but have not yet been published).
The biggest benefit of the latter 2 are by curtailing the spread of the virus from the infected to the the uninfected. (In other words, containment rather than protection). The basic mechanism as best as I understand it is explained below:
There is increasing evidence that the severity of the infection is related to how many virus particles are infecting you. The lesser the #, the less sick you will be.
There are two basic ways this viral spread can happen through the air:
1. Most of the virus you shed will be in large particles embedded in your mucous droplets. These are the particles that the latter 2 masks are more effective in arresting at source, because they are bigger and so any covering will provide some protection in stopping them at source.
However these particles are therefore also heavier, so if they were not arrested at the point of emission, they would likely float down to the ground within 6 feet or so and unlikely to stay up at another person's face level assuming you are social distancing. So, if you are wearing one of the latter 2 types, they would protect you, but assuming you are far enough away, they will likely not reach you anyway. Still, if some do, there is of course some protection.
2. It also now accepted that some of the viral particles are aerosolized, and these will be very small. They can float large distances and some of them will go through surgical masks and cloth masks. So here the protective capability will be less.
But summing up across 1 and 2, these are the ways the surgical and cloth masks seem to work (significant containment of the larger particles, some protection from the smaller).
It is pretty easy now to get 'state of the art' information about Covid research. Just go to https://scholar.google.com/ and type in your keywords. Most journals have lifted paywall barriers during the pandemic. I know Nature had a review sometime late September/Early October about this point.

Jim McCrossin is an athletic trainer afaik. That descriptor is misleading.
Yeah, it did seem stupid, especially as it is unnecessary. |

If they did work, we wouldn't be seeing large increases in cases since mass adoption of masks began. In PA, that started June 19th. Many other states were earlier. The same applies to other countries that have had stringent mask requirements even walking outdoors. Yet, their case counts have been rising, as well.
The sad truth is that this virus is not going away. The only solution is herd immunity and protection of the most vulnerable with serious comorbidities. And before someone female dogs at me for saying this, what do you think vaccines do? They infect all those that take them in an effort to arm a person's immune system to defend against future infection of a serious nature. When mass numbers of people take the vaccine, the population is reaching herd immunity, the difference being the use of vaccines achieves it artificially. |

I'd love to see Sam find his way past his troubles to be a regular on the Flyers. Now is not the time. If they left him on the roster and he played well enough to show progress, he likely would not clear waivers following that. He'll benefit more from AHL time and he's very unlikely to be picked off waivers going straight there. |

The virus is not going away because their has been NO uniform mandate for opening and closing of businesses and mask wearing country-wide.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to say either way what does or does not work, but countries that DID shut down are doing better now.
Mainly in SE Asia. So draw your own conclusions.
And herd immunity WILL mean 400,000 more deaths.
