They have options to protect 1 or 2, but as I said, if the elect to protect 2, they then have fewer skaters they are able to protect.

First, it makes their depth a ton more tenable this season. JJ as the #3 is risky.

When it comes to the expansion draft, now you aren't forced to qualify and expose JJ. You could trade him, protect him, or not qualify him. It's a much better situation. Let his play dictate his next contract, not an expansion draft.
