I was going to launch into an angry rant about how the Coyotes are gutless for issuing this statement:
“Mitchell sent a letter to every NHL team acknowledging what happened and apologizing for his behavior. Mitchell made a huge mistake, but we are providing him with a second chance to prove himself. We hope that he uses his platform moving forward to raise awareness about bullying and to discourage this type of behavior.”
..and then not having the cojones to stick to their word.
Then I remembered that the best thing that could happen to this kid is to be cut loose by the Coyotes. - Atomic Wedgie
On a more sober note:
Looks like this kid is going to get cancelled. Forever.
This poop scares the hell out of me. I'm raising two young children (7 and 2) and, while trying to instill values that promote well-being for everyone (regardless of circumstance or immutable characterstics), I'm worried that kids do stupid poop all of the goddamn time. In this day and age of rampant social media, the mob is willing to stretch its tendrils back in time to find anything that can be used to destroy you.
Ugh.
This timeline really sucks. |

preventing the kid from earning a living playing hockey. - dmnted
You think this will be it?
The bull poop that goes on in hazing in junior leagues is disturbing. Aliu was the first to come out with it and Downie’s career was already over.
Wait until some stuff comes out about players in the league today.

Just be glad the Xbox Live Chat never was able to record in those mid-2000's. We'd be cancelling an entire generation. |

Throw away the key.
The kid will continue to play hockey and will HOPEFULLY do all in his power to show the community he has changed.
Dubas will sign him in 4 years. He’ll play for the Growlers, then Marlies then will be a nice 4th line energy player that we all get excited about but is then traded to the Kings for a backup goalie. |

Hazing doesn't go on for years. You would not haze a disabled kid anyway. This gets worse, the more we learn. |

We all make mistakes. But what revealed this kid's true character (or lack thereof) was that he never apologized in person. Writing a court mandated apology doesn't cut it. He likely never even wrote it.
The other kid involved actually DID apologize to the victim and it was accepted. This dirtbag had every opportunity to do the right thing and he chose NOT to do it. So (frank) him. |

So you are saying out of the 1,000 players that play in the NHL each season, none of them bullied kids like that?
Odds are not in your favour.
Hockey players are notorious douches growing up, which doesn’t help your chances either.

From what I saw and read, he continued to do it after the charges, and there was a letter from the kids mother going around that basically said he never apologized to him...it went from he was 12 to 14 to 16.
i dont feel bad for people who have to answer for their disgusting behavior...meaning the law and public opinion - senstroll
I know that the mother is saying this, but it's actually purposefully deceptive.
He was ordered by a court to write a letter of apology to the victim. I'm going to go ahead and assume that he actually did that, because the court wouldn't have just let it slide.
Apparently the other bully apologized to the victim directly.

So keep in mind I thought that Brett Kavanaugh was not fit to be named a Supreme Court Justice due to his illegal actions during the whole "Whitewater Scandal!" - when he leaked classified info at the behest of Ken Starr.
Having said that, reading his high school yearbook and using that against him was as horrifying as it was stupid.
I don't know this Mitchell kid from a hole in the wall. I don't have a dog in this fight.
But I do find it frightening that a kid made mistakes at the ages of 12-14, was tried and convicted, paid his debt to society, and he is now being prevented from moving on by the angry mob.
And on an even more depressing note, I fully guarantee that there will now be some story that comes out about how the mother or father of the victim stole a car or broke a store window 25 years ago. Because that's usually how these things work. |

Dude again.....
Do you realize what you are saying? You are trying to defend a kid who was bullied for being disabled.....only to call me “slow” and “on a delay” as an insult...
Like do I really have to explain how wrong you are in this situation? I really shouldn’t have to. Come on man you are better than this.

Who was the coach who was fired for behaviour that the team determined was something they thought was inconsistent with their core values - ie really really bad? Their press release said that as they learned more they found that his behaviour wasn’t consistent with their core values - same language. So, it looks like they didn’t check enough before drafting the kid. |

It was disgusting, but the way the hockey world rallied around Downie was even worse.
The guy was an absolute criminal lunatic his entire career. But as Frenchie pointed out, he had talent, so they found ways to excuse it - and to praise it.
It didn't hurt that he was a Philadelphia Flyer. |

I'm not too worried about my kids.
Not because I don't think they'll do stupid stuff that might recorded, they very well might. Hell they probably will because that's what teenagers do.
But I simply cannot imagine my kids doing something THAT horrible for THAT long.
The way we are raising them, and seeing them grow everyday I dare think they'd never do it. |

I had initially defended the action thinking that a 12 or 13 year old kid shouldn't be held accountable as an adult 6 years later. Then I read yesterday that 2 years after the conviction, the bullied boy's mother claimed he was still calling the kid the N-word and being an ass to him when he was 16. That doesn't sound like someone changing for the better or growing up. |
