there was a period of about 6-7 years in the 2010s where Ottawa didn't have a single Russian play for them.....there was nobody between when Gonchar left and when they traded Smith for anisimov this past year.
also, before drafting Sokolov this year, the last Russian they drafted was Bashkirov in 2007.
true or not, it was a relatively common belief that Ottawa deliberately avoided Russian players.....for whatever reason
