No one should be compared to Hossa - it's never accurate and always going to lead to disappointment.
- L_B_R

Unless the player is in HOF conversation any comparison to Hossa is a bad joke.

With the flat CAP and teams already up against it, it's highly unlikely Saad gets anywhere near $6M per year.
- scottak

He will need a great year to get more than $4.5 for any duration.

Anyone notice that Tyler Bertuzzi got $3.5 mil. in arbitration? He has Brandon Saad numbers the last couple of years. Maybe the Hawks were lucky to even get Zadorov for him. I know with COVID we are in a "new normal", but do you think Saad would have accepted a $4 mil. offer from the Hawks to extend?
- LAHawk

I think no to Saad accepting $4 and yes he would be stupid not too.

I know someone’s going to feel that Chalupa is showing a severe lack of respect for those who preceded him.
- Ogilthorpe2

Yeah, a total lack of respect for Tanner Kero and Jacob Nilsson.

Yup. He's getting his money either way so that's not a concern for him. Question remains does he wanna spend another season in "rehab" and or the press box or waive and find a place he can finish out his career and play? People on here can say all they want it skirts the rules and he controls his destiny. Ask horton, lupul, clarkson, hossa, etc etc. The team will torture him if he fights it. Maybe hawks deem him healthy and he plays a few games but he's likely traded or LTIR'd this whole season. It's sad but it's been done over and over in the league to skirt the cap.
- ctbullets

Except the Hawks don't need the cap space at the moment and I doubt they'd do that to a player of Seabrook's past importance to the franchise. It sounds more like that's what you want to happen and you're pulling this out of your ass

Why would Seabrook - if he’s unhappy about not playing here - agree to go to an expansion team - and not play there? Yeah, it’s closer to his home, but....

Why would Seattle pay him whatever the Hawks don’t retain to not play him? They will have a lot of 4/5/6 defensemen to choose from in the draft to play in front of him, like VGK did.

I think Seabrook plays out his contract here.

- StLBravesFan

Agreed there are better ways to get to the floor. Vegas got there so fast the ceiling was quickly their problem.

Cannot do. 50% is the max on any ONE salary retention.

Also, team only allowed three...we have 2 used. Those three can only add to 15% of the CAP. Would have to check the other two, to see how close we are, but 50% of Seabrook's MAY be outta reach....

edit...checked. We have lots of dollar room to retain 50% of Seabrook. But, since he has FOUR years remaining...I think we can forget Hawks doing that. Just not sensible...

- hawk35

Can you buyout retained salary. Seems I've seen that done by other teams with players we traded for?

I think the hawks won't play him and will try to bury him somehow. We've seen it alot in the league with mysterious long term injuries. Is it legal? Well other teams have done it. Were the injuries legit that the players couldn't play? Who knows? Seabrook's way out to continue playing out his career is to move on to a team that has a spot in the lineup for him and will pay out his contract instead of being in constant rehab and in limbo. I'm sure many people on here will say that's illegal and we can't do that. We'll see but to answer your question I think that's the reasoning.
- ctbullets

Or he can do nothing, collect his millions, be a good advisor to young guys and not get his brains beat out. Pretty soon that won't look so bad to him.

Joffrey lupul, Marian hossa lol. It can happen. It's a long shot but possible.
- ctbullets

No way Hossa was ever going to play for a million bucks a year. It's no coincidence his skin condition became unbearable the year it hit $1 million. It's expected Seabrook would fight LTIR which is the opposite of what Hossa did.

hossa has said multiple times he fully intended to play out his contract and even last season made mention that he misses playing.

It was Saad's age going into his next contract more than what his ask will be that I believe made the Hawks go in a different direction

Wish they got more than a Low IQ bottom pair D-man but it is only for one season unless they compound the trade by extending Zadorov,

Anothe blog filled with unrealistic expectations of moving Seabrook. LOL. Give it up. He is not going anywhere and won't be a problem when the Hawks are competitive again.

Sending any assets to move him only serves to set them back. You don't build aa team by signing mediocre FA to overpriced contracts.

You sign FAs to supplement your roster.

What else would he say? Anything else exposes the scam and he probably does miss playing. I miss being 25 again.

So we gave away a low-IQ forward with plus skating and boulders for hands

Totally agree and to take it one step further, Kane and Toews aren't going anywhere either.

Do you ever think that the league "forced" him to retire due to the recapture penalty they created? He should have been able to retire when he wanted to, just like any other worker can.

You're the only one who thinks that. Well, and the fact he didn't actually retire blows that conspiracy theory.

Lol we don't need the cap space? I'm sure the hawks would give a limb to get rid of this contract. Dream on dreamer. Yeah let's keep him around for his leadership and quality play til he's near 40. This is a business not some kumbaya singalong around a campfire. Of course I want this to happen and so should everyone else who cares about the blackhawks.

Can we go back to talking potential trades so I can resume dreaming about getting Dylan Cozens in a Kane to Buffalo trade. Here's Wiz' pre-draft writeup on Cozens on DraftSite:

"Difference making power centre-wing with great wheels, powerful wide base and stride, motor, powerful shot and ability to use his hands to quickly take possessions and make plays. A big power player who will play in traffic every shift and do so with some nasty. His veracity in puck battles along the boards makes it necessary to “double cover’ him. World class skater who is very strong on his skates and shows added explosion on the attack, while being able to pass the biscuit with precision and touch. Point per game WHL rookie last season who commits to a 200 foot game. Armed with a deadly selection of shots. This man child isn't through filling in or building his muscle. Makes everyone around him better. Will cause problems in front, or from the perimeters. Exploits the defense and reads linemates well. Fluid non-stop player who plays hockey smartly and would fly through a wall to help his team win. Can project as a big centre as well as a big wing. The sky’s the limit."

Dach, Cozens, DCat, Kubalik, Reichel, Suter is a pretty good starting point from which to construct a very good and young top-9.
