Dom's model is absolutely full of holes, and he doesn't need to just "tweak" it like he does. He needs to revamp it. It strongly favours offense, while not doing enough to recognize defense. I think it also tries to compensate for recency bias by ignoring too heavily recent performance - meaning aging players get the benefit of past performance despite being in a state of obvious decline.

This year, we’re introducing a tiered approach to the rankings, with staff asked to put each team into one of 10 categories based on this ranking guide for each tier.

Cup Favorite (1-2): Teams that are likeliest to play in the Cup Final

Cup Contender (3-5): Teams that have a real shot at winning the Cup

Dark Horse (6-9): Teams that can make some noise in the playoffs and surprise

Playoff Team (10-13): Teams that are likely to make the playoffs

So did Marner and Toews played like he was 26. I wouldn't put such fatalism in a 4 game string during one of the most unique moments in history.
- AdamFrench

I'm sorry but I cannot do that Adam.

Otherwise it would imply we don't have 2 young star centres in Montreal.

So until next season begins, these few games during the summer are the absolute truth!!

Who has a better model? Who has been more right in their predictions while using stats and evidence to back it up?

Seriously I am curious.

Doms model has been more right than all the mainstream TSN/SN predictions. Is there a better model out there? I want to see it.

- Santo_44

So you actually remember all these predictions?

I sure don't.

I think 60 points for Suzuki and 50 for KK would be more than expected if that's what happened next season (over 82 games).

I'm sorry. Did I imply that there was a better model or even another model? I'm not familiar with the models in use - but I am familiar with Dom's work, which allows me to criticize the parts I don't like. I like much of what he does. I also like how he's pretty transparent about what he's attempting to do.

What I said was that Dom continues to tweak his model, despite it continually favouring teams that are heavy on offense over teams that are better on defense. I don't feel his tweaks are made to consider defense, but rather to lessen the overall impact of the offense slant. I do think he needs to revamp the defensive considerations. Obviously I don't know his formulas, but when look at his results and projections, there's clearly a bias towards offense.

60 points for Suzuki? Isn't he Bracco 2.0?

Wait, does that mean the Leafs are going to miss the playoffs again next year?

Dom is pretty good with his posts..

Then there is that Editor In Leaf dude, that makes some ridiculous claims... Like Wendel Clark wasn't a good leader or that Mario Lemieux wouldn't excel in today's game.

Yes well I'd expect every Leafs fans to love the guy.

For example, he predicted the Leafs would finish 2nd behind Tampa last season.

So yeah. Great.

I am hoping next season, Boston struggles

I love what he says, but it feels like false promises. Like this Nigerian lawyer who just keeps taking my money and never sending me my inheritance from my Nigerian Prince uncle. Hurry up, dude! It turns out the sales guy was wrong and this Lambo doesn't "pay for itself".

2nd in the Atlantic? Of course. I thought they could finish there too in a battle with the Bruins.

He had them 2nd overall in the league.

Hearing that the Ottawa Senators are close to signing UFA forward Alex Galchenyuk.

Sens are going to be terrible

back in the day, I wanted the Leafs to draft him so bad cuz they needed a C...like I would have been fine if they traded a poop ton to move up to get him... Bozak Connelly was what we had

now we have Matthews Tavares...and people write articles about the JT mistake signing.... so (frank) off with that

Not a hypocrite but I think the Borat thing was silly. Sorry if I was too strong on that but I don’t think Alex Jones deserves a platform and don’t really respect someone who provides him one for entertainment. I think there is a huge difference between the two sets of “entertainment”, that’s all. As I said I don’t listen to Rogan or podcasts at all really so I only know him for the clips I’ve heard.
- Canada Cup

When people start talking about who "deserves a platform" or not I get chills up my spine.

There's plenty of people who I don't respect but I don't believe anyone should be cancelled or blocked from stating their bs... unless it's libel, incites violence, sedition, etc. of course.

Granted, Alex Jones has crossed the line on free speech before and should be prosecuted for it (a defamation suit is currently in progress). But should a person be denied a platform forever because they did cross that line? Nah. We have courts and laws that can decide appropriate punishment. Not to mention, there is a responsibility and an accountability on the listener for acting on what they have listened to.

As per Rogan, I would suggest that you need to listen to more than just clips (which are usually taken out of context) before you condemn him. But hey, you're free to choose what you listen to and how you feel about him regardless.

I just choose not to apply purity tests because no one will ever fit exactly into my particular box of purity.

So how do playoffs work in this model I wonder? Top 4 from each division for 16 team tournament? That means 3 bubble teams from Canada, one from Central and one poopty team from Pacific are in. Do they do some rounds in each division to bring it down to 2 each?

Also, awards are going to be impossible to sort out if teams don’t play each other.
