I just stated what the Vegas owner said when asked why he made the trade 🤷‍♂️What are you on about
- CanuckDon

What "I'm on about" is commenting on how teams are trading within their division more and more these days bcus the actual impact that ONE player has against his former team is a non factor. I was digging deeper into the issue rather than some throw away comment from the Vegas GM. Has it been officially announced that there will be in fact an all Canadian division? Does he think the league will never go back to it's normal divisional structure? Does he think Vegas won't ever play Vancouver (Schmidt) again?

I wasn’t disagreeing with you. Perhaps GM’s are more comfortable in the past to make divisional trades. I mean if the Canucks offered a 1st amd the panthers offered a 5th? Sure trade him to the Canucks. But this trade makes zero sense. The fact the owner said that they are in a different division as the first reason he gave? He must have some confidence. They shouldn’t have traded him to Van. Vegas (frank)ed up. Just my opinion

So if the Canucks play in an all Canadian division, does this mean we may get to play the Leafs in a playoff round?

Yes absolutely, if a pandemic never happened every (frank)ing thing would be different.

The cap would have increased to start with, we would never ever get Schmidt for a 3rd round. I would be in Italy drinking a nice Brunello or Amarone.

We were supposed to have gone to Chile/Argentina but settled for the Okanagan.

Vegas still would have been hooped, so that trade could still have happened. I’m just saying Benning painted himself into a corner and this was always going to be the way this off season went. Next year will be a bit better, and the following year they should actually have some flexibility.

Sounds like you had a hell of a trip. Sorry we couldn’t squeeze you in for a tour. Next year. Hopefully.

You’re on! It was a bit exhausting, 20+ wineries in five days. Brought home 70 bottles, my wine fridge is overflowing. I have a few take aways that I’m curious to know what people think but I’ll likely ask Twitter as the responses in here would be, um, “interesting”...

I was just messing with you.

I'll praise him if he deserves it. You'll praise him no matter how little he does even if he's eating popcorn in the press box you'll have a spin on how much experience he's gaining by watching while being scratched.

lol by not bashing him its not praising lol. Pointing to the reality of the NHL flat cap the Canucks will need Podz ELC to make up for the talent gap.

What’s the most probable scenario given what we know and what the odds are? For every Brock Boeser who comes in and forces his way into the the top six, on a poor team, there’s 200 second round picks who don’t ever play in the league let alone the bottom six.

Podkolzin has more upside because of his size and north south skating, I’m no expert but from what I’ve seen he needs a lot of work to be an NHL player.

Anyone putting either of these two in the top six is quite frankly a homer, heck I hope they turn into HHOF’ers....but I seriously doubt it.

What exactly have you seen? Have you been watching many KHL games this year? SEL?

I fully agree you have to take each prospect with a grain of salt because the hype train is always going. However, there's a difference between the odds of a second round pick in general panning out, and someone you've already draft and can see their progression post-draft.

Also, since you're a Seahawk fan, this is pretty funny: https://twitter.com/espn/...-not-to-chase-you-down%2F

I know a lot disagree but the Canucks are actually in a good spot - won't lose anyone of significance in the expansion draft, can likely steal a decent player from a team who isn't in a good position for the expansion draft (and the Canucks should still be able to protect that player even if it means exposing Myers, etc. if possible), have vet contracts dropping from the books over the next two years (the time it should take two of Podz, Hogs, Lind, Rathbone, etc. to be ready), and the flat cap likely suggests lower cap three year bridge deals for Petey, Demko and Hughes (team should have some extra cap to add support players).

After this season the Canucks' window will be wide open for three years so it will be on Benning to fill the gaps...hopefully a bunch of the draft picks pan out and that only means a couple smart UFA signings and/or smart trades to round things out.

This is only true of a defenseman. Even as it stands for forwards they'll have to decide to expose one of Lind, Pearson, Virtanen.

Oh that's right, my bad. I was looking at the capfriendly tool I just forgot expiring contracts don't count.

Regardless, they have to protect Lind right? That means there's not really any fwd slots left.

Ricky D just said on 1040 he spoke to Podkolzin’s GM over in Russia, he said the kid needs to work on his shot, it’s just not good enough to score in a men’s league. He’s having trouble scoring because of it.

Something he can take upon himself and work on to improve.

Yup. Lind likely exposed. So do they keep him from spotlight of NHL time while favoring protected prospects forwards like Hogs and Podz to get their NHL feet wet in bottom 6 spots next season. Then hope that Roussel is taken by the Krak.

If you read Carol's blog she had those GM statements there. Then if you read the thread you would see that was mentioned too as a good thing. Now Podz is getting the VHL and junior time to get his offense going on top minutes to work on quicker release.

From this thread:

Protect:

Pettersson
Bo
Brock
J.T.M.
Virtanen
Gaudette
Motte

Schmidt
Myers
Juolevi

Demko

That leave Zack Mac, Rousell and Holtby as exposed.

If that's his biggest issue, then tell him to spend some time with Petey.

"Boy this kid, he's not having a great year. You want to see development, improvement, and he's still stuck. He's not scoring, he's gotta improve his shot. According to his GM, the shot isn't there"

"He's gonna play for Russia's World Junior team, most likely he'll be captain. He's going to get a coach who absolutely loves him, Igor Larionov. He's going to get a ton of ice time and look, he's gotta dominate. This kid is going to get icetime, be on the PP"
