The rate of death may be slowing the next surge in cases and hospitalizations is coming on top of a high level of infection already in place. Total deaths in the US are projected to reach 380,000 if current restrictions are kept in place and almost 500,000 if things are eased further. This is going to be a poopty winter.

I'm not trying to downplay it. I have been a banner flyer for COVID severity. I am well aware of how deadly it is, and how impactful it is. I'm basically just saying that if you look at the data, and the echo (so from point of infection to about 10 days after, you have seen a historical pattern showing a similar graph of COVID-related deaths that almost follows the rate of infection), the rate of fatalities is in steep decline.

This, in no way, implies that this is not something to treat as severe - but it is to suggest that our procedures of social distancing and mask wearing are helping. One other thing to consider - there was a study which implied that masks weren't stopping people from getting infected - which, again, is probably somewhat true (in that if I am maskless and you are maskless, and we have a non-distanced conversation, the virus can transmit in 1-2 minutes; if we're both masked and non-distanced, that becomes around 10 minutes; if we're distanced . . . maybe 30) but the study also noted that 71% of those people in one geographic area had been to a restaurant prior to getting infected - so their "I always wear a mask" statement had some holes. So, again, poorly ventilated, indoor spaces are a serious risk - even with limited social distancing practices.

All that crap being reiterated - If hockey starts up, I think it's still without fans initially - but baseball players did a good job of controlling themselves once they had their initial bumps. I think hockey players can do the same thing.

I guess it's a fumble? But it's honest. People need to recognize declining industries as just that. It's not a light switch - you don't just stop - but yeah, you have to recognize that alternative energy sources are the future. I skimmed an article recently that talked about fusion being only a few years away from a major breakthrough (I don't know how you predict that - but as I said, I wasn't invested in the article).

I watched the debate as well, and I don't think Biden meant to immediately shut down oil and gas companies.. I am pretty sure he said that he wants to get to a net-zero by 2034...ish?

My daughter's school was built in 1920. They've done a couple of add-ons here and there - but there are a large number of problems with the ventilation in that school that they can't remediate because there's asbestos issues. The school has been earmarked for closure since we moved here, but there's nothing scheduled in the near future. In the winter it's cold and in the summer it's hot. The boiler really only heats the lower levels, and there is no A/C. So I can absolutely confirm this.

It's why both my kids are doing the Remote Learning until things settle down.

My son goes to a different school, but the class he was supposed to be in had a case of COVID that quarantined the class starting on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. All of his school friends (which oddly enough all ended up in the SAME class this year) are in quarantine. Which means that my kid, who is still doing Remote Learning school, is constantly f'ing off to go play Minecraft online with his friends.

Wow!

My elementary school was the inside of a knotted burlap sack. On the good days we were only beaten with sticks three times. But, you know, it was Kitchener, so . . . Germans.

Probably better than the public school I went to - built around 1960 - which almost assuredly was 92.6% asbestos.

He didn't.

But what he said was soooooooo brutally awkward, that the Republicans are going to make video clips and blast the airwaves in Pennsylvania.

All he had to say was "A Biden Government would help diversify America's energy portfolio."

It would have been the equivalent of taking a knee with 40 seconds left, up by 6, on the 50 yard line.

Instead, he threw an interception. Trump caught it on his 2 yard line.

Is the game still over? Probably. Hope so.

But instead of running out the clock, Biden now has to play defence for the next 40 seconds - and the game is still in jeopardy.

I get that the mortality rate is lower and will continue to drop as the makeup of those who are infected shifts and treatment improves. That’s the good news.

The bad news is how far the virus has spread, where it has spread and how rapidly it will now grow. The first phase was pretty much limited to NYC and a few place, second phase a few more and now the whole country is covered. As you see the daily numbers start to shoot up, they’re shooting up from a high base of infection and case numbers will get really high. Also, rural areas with hospitals already overburdened (and many shut down) aren’t going to be able to handle it).

So, lower mortality rate more than offset by huge and exponential growth in cases. Daily deaths are projected to rise from 1,000 or so now to 2,500 in mid December and 5,500 in mid February under current policies (less with universal masks, more with easing).

That’s the States. We’ve got our own challenges but we’re nowhere near where they are. As long as governments go with some kind of limited closures and people wear masks, I don’t see us where they are.

Oh yaaaa. I'd imagine there is probably little/no interest in taking 4 x 5m off TB's hands right now. I'd guess you'd have to really sweeten that to get any bites.

Tampa doesn't have to be compliant until the season "starts" but I'd imagine they've considered the other option.

option 1 - paying heavy sweeteners to cut Johnson and probably taking 25c on the dollar to move Killorn;

option 2 - Saying (frank) it we just won the Cup we don't need to pay the sweeteners to move those guys. Instead let move real assets for cheap ELC contracts.

So instead of Johnson and a 1st or good prospect or whatever for just cap space they move Cirelli for a good young player making 900k.

It's not ideal but it could be the better option if teams will pay for Cirelli. And it may be their only option if the guys with NMC/NTC can't be moved.

Hats off to them for winning a cup.

But that's not the goal, just to win once and throw your hat in.

I am not speaking from a leafs fan. From a perspective looking at the great teams the past few decades.

Chicago, LA, Boston. Dynasties that had to make minor adjustments but still created dynasties.

TB took advantage of their no state tax...Good for them, nice work....but then they (frank)ed themselves by getting even more greedy and giving the Joe blows NMC so they will sign for unbelievably cheap instead of just a discount.

Again, congrats on the cup. They are a Carolina Hurricane cup winner, not a Blackhawks,Bruins or Kings winner.

and hey that's fine, Id take that for my Leafs but the way they built their team through contracts was unsustainable to create long term success.
