I think they would agree to it, have to hope that come 2021, we'll be a little closer to a vaccine and have rapid testing available everywhere. Even if it was in a bubble (host cities) again
- PatC80

Both the NHL and NHLPA have been pretty clear that they aren't considering a bubble for the regular season.

Dear Eight Pound, Six Ounce, Newborn Baby Jesus, don't even know a word yet, just a little infant, so cuddly, but still omnipotent. We'd just like to thank you for all the races I've won and the $21.2 million, LOVE THAT MONEY! That I have accrued over this past season. Also due to a binding endorsement contract that stipulates I mention PowerAde at each grace, I just wanna say that PowerAde is delicious and it cools you off on a hot summer day and we look forward to PowerAdeís release of mystic mountain blueberry. Thank you, for all your power and your grace, Dear Baby God, Amen

If it distracts people from Biden's remarks that he wants to get rid of the oil and gas industry, what the heck, let's just keep talking about Rudy.

What a giant franking fumble - two minutes from the end of the franking debate.

- Atomic Wedgie

I guess it's a fumble? But it's honest. People need to recognize declining industries as just that. It's not a light switch - you don't just stop - but yeah, you have to recognize that alternative energy sources are the future. I skimmed an article recently that talked about fusion being only a few years away from a major breakthrough (I don't know how you predict that - but as I said, I wasn't invested in the article).

Ya I heard that too. Might have to go with the same rules as the last bubble. Opt out if you want (don’t get paid) or go and play and make a paycheque...

Leave it in the hands of each player but at the end of the day probably 95% of the players would go through with it. Short careers, make money while you can.

I had a discussion about alternates. Specifically electric car engines/batteries. Issue is its costly. Like ridiculous costly but in the next 5 or so years it should be cut in half and life and daily usage should double.

Alternates just aren't efficient for mass use and everyday use yet.

Some things to keep in mind with regards to the Coronavirus metrics of late. Numbers are rising, but the resulting echo that showed a similar rise in COVID related deaths is not in the same path. Those numbers are much smaller. This is a good thing, because it's possible that a second wave would be less deadly.

There's probably two principal reasons for this: (1) the people currently catching the virus are younger and therefore more capable of fighting off the virus, and (2) for the most part people are social distancing and wearing masks. What this does is reduce the amount of compromising viral load (yeah, yeah, I know how that phrase sounds) that people take in is significantly reduced. In previous coronavirus related illnesses (SARS / MERS), it was noted that the larger the initial onset of viral intake was, the more severe the illness was. I think that with COVID-19 we're probably looking at a very similar pattern.

It's definitely something to worry about - especially if you are or have contact with those who are at risk - but it's actually being somewhat controlled recently in terms of the lethality of it, and (while I have no citation for this, it makes logical sense) those who suffer long-term impacts such as organ damage.

Or based on that, I think if this trend continues and rapid testing improves, an NHL season in January seems plausible.

People that rely on it for their livelihood are probably hoping that it doesn't happen for another 50 years though. Most are probably not doing job training in large battery repair or turbine maintenance atm.

I have done no research on it, but in a recent conversation with my father - who has been doing all sorts of reading about this stuff - he was saying that some of the batteries for the electric cars are starting make incredible breakthroughs in terms of their power distribution and retention as well as the ability to take a charge quickly. He noted the same about stability and production capability being ready for mass production. Basically he said what you were saying as well.

If I could buy an electric car that has the same pickup as a normal car for the same or cheaper than a combustion engine? It's a no-brainer.

That may be true.
Of course job loss would be horrible, hopefully theyll have transferable skills.
That said, i dont believe it will ever completely did out.
But in the next 20 years i could see the oil industry taking a big hit.

I do a lot of long distance driving so if I could save on gas I would. It's unfortunate that it's not cost effective yet and where I go there isn't as many charging stations so it doesn't make sense.

Once people are able to make trips for say, Toronto to Montreal comfortably, you will see a bigger uptick in purchases, even with the less than stellar battery life.

Interesting. I have been considering going to a one electric / one gas combustion car household.

battery issues are the biggest hold back for me right now.

only thing about fossil fuels - i can don't see wind/solar being able to replace them. Especially if we all start plugging our cars in. Too many issues like consistency, giant land foot print required etc.

But it's a no-brainer to use the sun/wind for free energy long-term.

need someone to get a big thinking idea like this built/tested:

The rate of death may be slowing the next surge in cases and hospitalizations is coming on top of a high level of infection already in place. Total deaths in the US are projected to reach 380,000 if current restrictions are kept in place and almost 500,000 if things are eased further. This is going to be a poopty winter.

I’m curious about that. It didn’t seem like a slip. General attitudes towards oil industry is pretty negative. My guess is that those who believe subsidies for the industry which he said he opposed are voting for Trump anyway. This might play well in the suburbs where Biden is making a big push. Anyway, it didn’t look like an oops.
