Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but if revenues < expenses, do the Arizonas and New Jerseys of the league really want to play?
- Atomic Wedgie

Well that is obvious but it’s just as obvious that we don’t know what is < than what in the short or long term. I’m sure it’s different for different teams. A few considerations.

* are there cheaper ways to bubble a full season?
* how much have they paid out in salary already and how much more are they obligated to pay either way?
* how desperate are they for revenues? There’s a lot of debt floating out there.
* what’s the impact of negotiation of new tv deal. I read ESPN might bid. It can’t be good negotiating a new deal if season I’d dark.

No hockey at all would be bad especially if it’s not clear how enthusiastic fans will be to go back into arenas even after the pandemic has wound down.

Oh yaaaa. I'd imagine there is probably little/no interest in taking 4 x 5m off TB's hands right now. I'd guess you'd have to really sweeten that to get any bites.

Tampa doesn't have to be compliant until the season "starts" but I'd imagine they've considered the other option.

option 1 - paying heavy sweeteners to cut Johnson and probably taking 25c on the dollar to move Killorn;

option 2 - Saying (frank) it we just won the Cup we don't need to pay the sweeteners to move those guys. Instead let move real assets for cheap ELC contracts.

So instead of Johnson and a 1st or good prospect or whatever for just cap space they move Cirelli for a good young player making 900k.

It's not ideal but it could be the better option if teams will pay for Cirelli. And it may be their only option if the guys with NMC/NTC can't be moved.

- The Law

I hope this is the scenario that plays out. I'd like to see GMs quit handing out NMC/NTCs like candy and players waiving them to help bail the teams out.

All good points.

I have absolutely no idea what happens if there is no season. I think (!) that players get 70% of their salaries, as per the CBA extension agreement, but I haven't seen a single article that hammers this out, which seems really weird - if I'm a reporter, this is one of the most important questions to ask.

The funny thing is the non-traditional markets are mostly the ones where people are more likely to throw caution to the wind and go back to arenas and large crowds.

I get it. Projecting as a means of coping with being close friends with literally no one.

If there is no hockey at all, I don't see how some teams survive this... Arizona and Florida may fold

Agreed. If they do have a shortened season (48-60 games) there is no need for a Winter Classic or All-Star Game..

Some on Twitter were a bit on edge about it though

- PatC80

I'll take a condensed 48 game schedule like the lockout season and be thrilled.
No need for an all star game.

There are rumours they want to play a game on lake Louise...Yeah I'd watch that game.

So? You're in a league. That's not your decision to make. You can vote, if you get one, to not have a season but the issue is, you're going to lose more money by people forgetting about you to other teams and other hobbies.

Change the team name to The Florida Herd.

Samesies...

I would be happy with a 48 game season.

It means Freddy won't play 60+ games, so we can't use that "He's tired" excuse..

I don't know the answer either but there are some significant fixed costs to think about. So it may be as simple as Some Revenue < Expenses is better than No Revenue < Fewer Expenses.

And then long term variables like TV money ...player contracts ...labour force liabilities ...bankruptcies.

Really it should be the league, the union, the landlords, the Networks, and the big sponsors all looking to minimize the loss this season by putting something together that keeps them all afloat.

This.

Not playing would cause more losses than playing.

Every other professional league is playing. They are playing all over Europe.

What is the NHL going to do? Fold like a cheap tent? And be the only major league in NA to do so?

The pessimists will scream this out until puck drops, they did it with baseball, the NFL, the bubbles for the NBA and NHL. Grabbing at straws saying NBA players are going to bring in hookers and it would be catastrophic.

There is a strong possibility we see hockey this winter. The pessimists will be against it until it happens and that is okay.

For sure. I mean he DOES tuck his shirt in.

But yeah, it's more the fact that he let himself be put in that situation in the first place.
