Well at that time they didn't know that Hall would be a possibility.

Yeah, wish he would just call it quits for his own safety. I mean the guy could get his next concussion brushing his teeth to hard.

Well a few things I have read say it would only be a 1mill cap hit, with a 2mill savings this year and 3mill for the final 2yrs. With the flat cap the next few years that extra could help.

https://www.capfriendly.c...lator/kyle-okposo#results

*According to CapFriendly

If we bought Okposo out now, these are his cap hits for the next 6years
20-21 4mil
21-22 5mil
22-23 3mil
23-24 1mil
24-25 1mil
25-26 1mil

If we wait till next offseason:
21-22 5mil
22-23 3mil
23-24 1mil
24-25 1mil

The first year or 2 of a buyout is tough no matter what

Saves $2 mil this year, $1 mil next, and $3 mil the following season.

The pegulas save $3 mil in actual dollars on his contract.

https://www.capfriendly.c...ut-calculator/kyle-okposo

His bonuses can’t be bought out, unfortunately they work against the Sabres.

They only save a mil on the cap next season.

Again it’d be best to pay his bonus and then move him to a team needing to hit the cap floor. $6 mil cap hit for two years but only $6 mil in actual money owed.

Hell it’d be cheaper for the Sabres to eat half his cap hit and not have a mil in dead space for three years.

Pair three lines with the top 6 guys

Have an actual top 9

Group them if you’re down and need to play top 6 heavy

Full circle back to Bylsma ideas eh?

It would be best to have him retire. Maybe he will after the upcoming season. He turns 32 in April.
If he doesn't, send him down to the Amerks, let his old, tired ass ride the buses fire awhile.
Sabres need Cap room next season after having punted every decision down the road 1 year..

Welp, most if not all of the UFA goalies are signed, likely leaves only a trade as the avenue to acquire one...no new news there obviously.

Seems that there was talk with AZ, and it makes sense given their ownership wants to cut $15m from the payroll...coupled with the fact they are already ~$3m over the Cap. The difficulty is the Sabres Cap space will likely be tight as well...therefore, a straight 1 for 1 trade could be a challenge.

After Olofsson is signed, hopefully at $3.5m or less, they would have roughly $2.0m Cap Space once the Bonus Overage at 50% this year is accounted for.
If they did trade Hutton back, they could squeeze in either Kuemper or Raanta...barely.

They could also Buyout Hutton during the second buyout period and save about $1.8m but that would require another move to be made to fit either goalie in.

What's interesting to me in all this...those who have said that;
a) $1.5m Bonus Overage, and
b) the $800k overpayment to Girgensons
will not have an impact on the Sabres ability to sign desired players might have to reconsider that stance...that's an extra $2.3m or $1.5m depending on how they distribute the Bonus Overage.

The savior will be if the Sabres can trade Risto, Monte, or Miller for futures and trade another for a LhD. That is a pretty tough path forward in these economic conditions IMO

We'll definitely be seeing trades once most of these RFAs are signed. 3-6 teams probably or definitely have to move players.

Ok, but Sabres will be up against it without money in / money out (MIMO) type moves...and if the teams trading desirable players are doing so to gain Cap space... the MIMO doesn't help them.
It just won't be easy.

Teams with $6+ in cap space:

Flyers, Islanders, Panthers, Bruins

Teams with $10-15+ in cap space:

Senators, Kings, Devils, Red Wings, Predators, Blue Jackets, Rangers

If theyre looking to unload a d man to clear space, these could be the places to look. There are a few more teams with around $4m.

Is it ever easy? There will need to be a lot of creativity. Probably a lot of salary swapping with surplus for need. Still plenty of teams with several millions in space.

Islanders need to continue to clear space to fit Barzal.

CBJ has to still sign Pierre Luc Dubois.

Appreciate the research though it does provide us with some clarity on teams that do have available cap room.

I think you see Miller or Montour moved for picks and I believe Okposo disappears into the sunset, he really needs to think about his health, 1 hit away from needing a drool tray. And by the time the season rolls around either Kuemper or Raanta are your 1A or 1B goaltender.

I would be calling the Kings to see if they want to swap a D for 1 of there C prospects, they are loaded at that position.

The dream of him disappearing will come to fruition if/when his next severe concussion occurs. I see all of these people just predicting he's going to retire because he needs to think about his health.

He's a competitor, and it's not going to happen unless he's forced to quit.

I agree, but as bad as his head is, that could happen if he brushes his teeth to vigorously.

Preds could be interesting. Miller for Tinordi and Kaskisuo. Bury Tinordi in the minors. Kaskisuo adds depth goaltending.

Preds signed a UDFA goalie named Cooley so Kaskisuo could be expendable (not saying he's good but if you basically get him for free, whatever)

I’m still looking at Winnipeg as they have a need at RHD.

Calgary still applies as well as they can use another RHD and can take on a little more cap however we would have to take some salary back.
