Big difference...Skinner was signed by Botts to produce offence and Girgs was signed by KA/Kruegs to bring energy, kill penalties and shut down other teams producers.

I don't care if people think they overpaid for Girgs, honestly the discussion is old. They signed him before free agency opened before they knew what the market looked like, maybe they wanted him more than Girgs wanted to stay. I don't know and neither do you. They wanted to keep him, they got what they wanted. You can try to compare point toals or whatever between Skinner and Girgs but you are wasting your time. Girgs has one roll as Krueger sees it and Skinner, who was signed by Botts, has a very different one. They made a decision, they got the guy they were comfortable with. He cost what he cost, period. There was no overpaying, they paid what they felt they had to in order to keep said player. There was no guarantee they could have gotten some other player they really liked in free agency for any cheaper.

If that’s the case I’d rather have the $2.2M in cap space to continue to have the option to spend.

Just like having another $9M in cap space could have been used last year if we didn’t have Skinner to make our triumphant run to missing a 24 team playoff.

My point is that he's played under 6 coaches and has pretty much been the same player under all of them.

I don't like the idea that he's been held back in any way. He's had every opportunity to move up in the lineup and benefits from more minutes than you'd really like to give him.

So when girgensons scored 12 goals , 5th highest goal total on the 2020 Buffalo Sabres, it was basically a lucky season? He didnt deserve a raise, based on a sport that rewards other players for their goal scoring?

I thought he was being used a bit differently from coach to coach?

Something about the log line taking more offensive zone vs. The last coach who had him taking more defensive zone starts?

I like his game. He improved his game last season. Improved his goal total.

Maybe I'm old school and like guys that dedicate years to buffalo without the recognition of superstars.

Fred jackson, kyle William's, zemgus girgensons?

Yes

His shooting percentage was 14

It was a complete statistical anomaly based on the totality of his career

So, one minute they understood the market and didn't qualify Kahun. The next, they didn't understand the market and went way over for Girgs? You're all over the place here.

Girgs was an aberration to every other move they've made this off-season. That's why is interesting.

I guess I’ll repeat it for the 134,213th time.

Everyone on the planet agrees Skinner is overpaid.

You’re new buddy Taylor Hall had 4 more goals than Girgensons last year. A few *less* than Sam Reinhart.

He makes 8 mil. What gives? He should be tripling Girgensons numbers are least

- sbroads24

Solid post and points boards 👍

I cant remember did hall have some sort if relationship with ralph prior?

It's almost like the coach (that's probably really the decision maker) is setting a price on players he trusts?

Almost like he demoted some guys off the top line that are not self motivated?

Paid the non superstar a reasonable 5.2

Wow - maybe krueger is in charge now that botts is gone?

Skinner agreed to stay here for 8 years.

Where’s that loyalty characteristic you claim to like ?

I like skinner alot. Probably top 3 favorite current sabre.

Jack
Risto
Skinner

But comparing contracts , it's fair to discuss and/or be disappointed by any/all players. Not just our favorites.

Skinmers contract isnt just a little bad - its worst contract in the league bad.

No, they valued Girgs as a piece of the team moving forward more than they valued Kahun.

For instance...does Kahun kill penalties? Does he play physical? How many left wingers do we have.

It makes me feel like this management team has a plan and they are acting on it decisively. That's more than we can say for Bott's tea. GMTM had a plan, he worked it decisively just happened to be a bad plan. I think this group understands it takes depth and players playing their roles. They have a role for Girgs and know what he can do in it and they didn't for Kahun.

Would I have liked to seen Girgs at less money, sure. Am I up in arms that they view he can be successful in a role and they made sure they kept him, no.

Reality for me, Skinner is a 30 goal scorer that’s a pest. Draws penalties, where we have Eichel and VO as specialist (obvi Eichel is not just that, but he’s lethal from the half wall). Doesn’t take penalties to offset. He’s a net positive to the team, and he was severely miscast using him with the pod racer and a third line winger playing center. I don’t think he needs Eichel, but having capable line mates will bring him to maybe a mil, Mil and a half overpaid. This is because he doesn’t get assists.

This is a bad argument because Kahun can play any forward spot nearly equally effective. I’m not gonna get hung up on Kahun because of Hall, but before him looked not great. They’re really relying on Tage to be the RW2 this year. Kahun could have at least provided competition there.

That's the part I don't see. Hall, Ullmark, Montour, Sam, Eakin are their only signings over 1.5m. Girgs is the only deal greater than 2 years. I won't call it indecisive, because I think it's more of a very conservative year to year approach. Girgs is a head-scratching exception. They've punted on literally every other decision.

Lol at anyone who think girgensons at 2.2 mill is a bad deal still.

That contract won’t kill us for overpaying him by 700K. Sorry to burst your bubbles

Okposo overpaid by 3 mill or skinner overpaid by 2- 3 million is way worse

Yet 700K extra is a bad deal 😂😂😂 My god the sky is falling

- Sabretooth9

You see, here's the difference.
Girgs was sign 2 weeks
Okposso was signed 3 years and had a career / Life threatening injury/recovery
Skinner was signed a year ago and it still get railed on.

That's it.

Minus the bad argument part, this is fair. I am hoping, as this would be about the 3rd week of July in a normal year, that they are not done yet.

Could they be "punting" because they are selling the team?
Could they be "punting" because they are going to structure the front office differently after covid and revenue levels out?
Having an open slate, so to say would help let someone new act on their vision.

What new owner / gm wouldnt like girgs at 2.2 per?
😉

Well, any player originally hugely overpaid in the first place and then the first year he collects 10 million produces the points of a 3rd or 4th line player would get ralled on in any market, but there are many more apologizers here than would be expected. The City of Good Neighbors.

It's also dangerously close to a rebuild. Just about every key player on this team can hit UFA in the next 2 years.

A complete rebuild might be in order with another failed season.

The Sabres should really look at the remaining "core" and start over.

Eichel
Sam
Risto
McCabe
Girgensons
Okposo

Eichel is going to want out this year or next. If we lose again. Maybe the rangers already offered some players and the Sabres have that in mind?

Hall was definitely take what you can get 1 year ufa

Olloffson 4 years for 13 million ?

Pretty much, but for this the last year or so was being discussed. Would have rather thrown his 37% raise at maybe Ben Hutton for a 1yr deal.
