He's not on LTIR right now, no – but you can backdate LTIR. The Canucks would have a pretty easy case as he left the bubble due to his head injury.

Also, it's far from certain he's going to attend training camp. His agent said they're talking about it, but they're taking his health into account first and foremost.

There's a lot of uncertainty, clearly, but there's also a lot of time before the season starts.

If I was Ferland i'd just take the year off and give him the best chance to resume his career after a full year and a bit off. Financially it would make sense as well for him. A lot of this year's salary will be clawed back due to lack of revenue, so he's not going to make close to his normal salary.

Wow...just reading the Times Colonist and it says over 1 million people have cast their vote for the upcoming provincial election already. There’s 3.5 million registered voters, although I’m sure a lot of them won’t vote, still, that’s pretty impressive.

Oh, sorry....back to hockey.

- Pacificgem

51% of them voted NDP.

Of course you have to be cap compliant, not saying you can't be. I'm thinking they'll just buy out Sutter and that will be that.

You can also "feel good" as you're recovering from an injury and still be on the LTIR

But yes, I would much rather have a healthy, fired up Ferland than spend money on another player. However, the good chance of him getting another head injury and ruining his life makes me hope he never plays again in the NHL for his and his family's sake.

It would be a shame if Sutter is a buyout casualty of Benning's ineptness. He's the most useful of the 3 stooges.

Ya, would rather him in the 4C slot than Beagle, but he's also pretty replaceable, so not the end of the world.

Virtanen sucks. I want to like him, but he's such a tease. Hopefully he gets his poop together, because at this point, he's 24 years old and still getting paid for potential, not results.

He scored 18 goals in 69 games?

YK is more international than Van Island

From my experience on the island you're either Chinese, or an old white person complaining about all the Chinese people

All 3 are very replaceable. One is just easier contractually to replace than the others.

I only see one of them being on the roster next season, and that's Beagle. So, hurrah, two replaceable parts are being replaced.

Yes, he had a good run during the season, but then he did jack in the playoffs, but for a couple of tap ins from the stars. $2.5m seems like a lot for his effort and consistency. Hopefully he figures it out, but he's frustrating to watch a lot of nights.

I feel like he's a bit of a coin flip. The pause before the playoffs probably hurt him more than most players on the roster. If he can repeat his successful regular season this year, I want to see how he does come playoff time should the Canucks make it in. I think it's a bit of a small sample size to write him off as a non-playoff guy.

I agree he can be frustrating though, it's so annoying watching a guy with the physical ability he has not fulfilling potential.

He reminds me a bit of Kessel. Fast skater, good shot, but always shows up to camp out of shape and there are questions about his motivation level.

Benning overpaid Beagle and Roussell, but our bottom 6 was garbage and we didn't have a lot of leaders on the team. I still like those moves, even if they are starting to come up against our cap as we want to move on. Sutter is along the same lines, though I remember they said they had offers on him at the start of last year. If that were the case, I would have shipped him then.

Ferland had a mushy head when he was signed and he hasn't been the player he was brought in to be. That was a risk that JB took and it didn't pay off.

Benning has done a good job with the cap, even as we want the last year to be over on some of these guys. It's not uncommon to give a year too much when trying to get some UFAs to improve. And it's tough to predict that our prospects were going to become superstars by the time they were 20 years old. That's just very good fortune.

Yeah, but Kessel delivered the goods, year in year out, fat bastard or not.

Agree for the most part. I think Rous wasn't much an overpayment, his knee injury just (frank)ed him.

That's the big thing: why did it hurt him more than others? Basically, because he's an idiot who doesn't know or care how to be a professional. And that shows up on the ice. It's one of those things he'll never really fully figure out.

It's a problem for sure. But my point was, if there is no pause and we go straight into playoffs this year, maybe he shows up and plays a lot better and we're not having this conversation.

I know I'm in the minority, but I don't care if he parties in the offseason and starts slow, so long as he figures out how to show up when it really matters.
