I think Florida loses that deal all day long. We'd also be trading out $5.5m in cap and taking in around $3.6m. I'm not sure Florida is looking to go that way. Although I would note that in terms of actual dollars, Kerfoot was paid $5m last year, and a $1m signing bonus already this year, so his actual salary this year is $3.6 and will be $2.7 in each of the next two years. Holl had a $1m signing bonus that's been paid out. The remainder of his 3 year / $2M deal is salary.
That said, if Florida, with about $12M in cap space, is unwilling to pay Weegar, he either wants too much or they are not interesting in increasing their cap hit. - Monkeypunk
how do you see Weegar vs Holl? they seem to compare pretty close.
I think the pendulum has swung a little to far on weegar now and Leafs fans are over rating him a bit.

He's an RFA, so you need to decide how much you like him I guess.
The discussion started with the idea of acquiring Weegar, and really our trade currency with any discernible value is Kerfoot, Dermott, Holl and Liljegren.
If you want to acquire Weegar and fit him under the cap, then you probably need to move a Holl or Kerfoot, depending on the salary expectations out of Weegar's camp. I think a projection that had him at $1.6 for 1 year, but up to $4m over 4 years.
If you move out a Kerfoot, you still want to replace him. It does open the door for Robertson, but is he ready for 2nd line wing? Can Mikheyev manage 2nd line wing? Who takes on the 3C role if Thornton can't manage that amount of 5v5 ice reliably?
On a side note - I had thought Weegar would be cheaper, but if he were a $4m / year cap hit, then Holl + Kerfoot, as Pat suggested, is probably a cap equivalent. - Monkeypunk
I think the key to the deal, if that did happen is that the Leafs would need to get a centre included in the return.. Maybe something like Kerfoot, Holl and Engvall for Weegar and Acciari.
Kerfoot and Engvall are both under control past this season.

Ya, I just think he's done on the blue line until these guys have had a chance to show. If they need a improvement they can keep their lineup together and add at the deadline (to manage the cap).
If I'm Weegar, at 26 and with UFA coming next summer, I'd want a 1 yr deal and then go shop my services next summer. He'll be a 27 yr old RHD who's put up some good underlying numbers. 5 x 5 isn't unreasonable next summer.
I think that's why nobody's dangling anything nice to FLA in spite of the fact that teams like him.
For the Leafs maybe you say lets take him on his 1 yr arb and negotiate with him next summer. As you say you've gotta clear out ~3 million and make room by moving Holl or Dermott.
If I'm Dubas I tell FLA to keep my number on speed dial and revisit a deal at the deadline.

I know Dubas said he's done, but if the Mikheyev hearing goes against the Leafs and the Panthers are worried about Weegar's arbitration hearing, maybe he'll make a move sooner than later |

some post draft rankings

i will enjoy looking back at the Lou/hunter drafts vs Dubas in a few years.
2015 - ??
2016 - Lou Hunter
2017 - Lou Hunter
2018 - Dubas kinda I guess, was made GM shortly before..
2019 - Dubas
2020 - Dubas
yes i know AM is on Pronmans ranking...even if you remove him..lets say top 10 or 12.
The bader method really likes the Leafs 2020 draft. - senstroll
I thought Hunter ran the 2015 draft? Wasn't the story that Babs wanted the Leafs to draft Hanifin but Hunter wanted Marner?

I can't see it going against the Leafs, though. There's absolutely no grounds for it.
Unless they decide to channel their inner refs, just to screw the Leafs. |

Yup. Every year Hunter was with the Leafs, he was in charge of the draft. |

I agree with this.
I was on Weegar for months but now looking at the roster and the cap space we have left...there’s not much of a point.
Plenty of options now, if there needs to be adjustments it’s likely that we have the TDL 25 games into the season. |

100% correct.
good god can you imagine had the Canes got Marner and Toronto got Hanifin instead?
We wouldn't have Svechnikov and Hamilton now though. |

You could have sucked for only 5 years to get these players, would have worked just the same. But NOOOO had to go a whole decade.
We do appreciate it though.

You're probably right. At this point they have Rielly - Brodie / Muzzin - Holl / Dermott/Lehtonen/Bogosian.
I do think Weegar is an upgrade over Holl or Dermott - largely because of his physicality - but you're likely correct that we have to see what you have in this team. How much of a step is Dermott going to be taking forward (if any)? Young D almost seem to have an epiphanous moment when they start their progression. I think he has the hockey IQ to make that move. |

Hes one of our better forwards who can defend. - Fakepartofme
Really? What I saw from him last year said the exact opposite. He's turnover prone, awful positionally... He's so easily moved off the puck it's ridiculous.
I particularly found all of his poor play amplified when you took him off the dot and put him on the wing, he's got to be the first guy I've seen on this team look worse with Tavares than he was without.
Are the metrics saying otherwise? I'm not an advanced stats guy and I'll own that outright. |

I'm sure adding Mike Smith will turn things around for them.
I do like the Turris contract. Cheap effective third line centre imo.
But boy, what a mess they've been. |

It's a fair question. I like Weegar a fair bit more than Holl - because he is more physical while still being more mobile. I think he's likely better with the puck as well. I think Holl is just fine when playing with Muzzin. He knows his role and performs it well. I think a guy like Weegar would be much better at it. |
