The Athletic talking heads had both Mikheyev and Dermott at about 1 - 1.25 on 1 yr show me's.

I'm prepared to be disappointed on Mikheyev b/c he's got some leverage.

Dermott has zero leverage. If he holds out will anyone other than his agent notice?

- The Law

Mikheyev's leverage is that he can take his ball and go home. We like him, but the cap is the cap. If he decides to take his ball and go home, so it goes. Enjoy your homemade borscht.

I think I read that the Leafs can't walk away, as the contract will be under a certain dollar value.
- Atomic Wedgie

I had read something similar. I think the number was $3.5M which is sort of astronomical in a cap tightened world.

Didn't the new CBA ensure it cannot drop?

I read something the other day on the athletic that sounded optimistic about TV revenues even during Covid. The NHL US deal is disgustingly low so even in the era of Covid there's a big jump coming.

IIRC, NHL gets 200 milly per year from the US national deal and the NBA recently renegotiated there's at 2.7 billion per year.

NBA will always be much higher but the NHL deal is 10 years old and was always really poor. Not sure what the new deal will be but networks are already fighting for the rights and it'll kick in in 2022. Possible that the NHL breaks up the rights into a number of different groups to maximum revenue.

They need to get it back on ESPN. This ensures it will get featured on SportsCentre.

Somebody on the staff is infatuated with overagers that suck.

I'm going to blame Jim Vesey

you walk away from the the contract no trades allowed
- dmnted

Fairly sure we don't have the option to walk away. Read something about the only option we have, is to decide the term (1 or 2 years) after the arbitrator sets the value.

Edit: Like Wedgie said just before I did...

Agreed, but it's a part of the negotiation.

If I'm Millstein I have that on the table and I'm reminding the Leafs that I've essentially been a Russian scout for them the past 5 years. That relationship is important to Dubas.

But then Dubas can turn and say that the Leafs have been a gateway to the NHL for a lot of his clients and that relationship is important to Millstein.

It's probably worked out better for Millstein. Zaitsev's $4.5M contract, Ozhiganov getting a shot . . .Mikheyev has worked out. Barbanov is yet to be seen. SDA and Korshkov are also pretty up in the air.

There's no denying that there's a strong tie there, but you're not pissing him off if you pay him market value based on what he's accomplished.

Lol
Possibly, although not much cap room.
Maybe a move to get a little tougher in the top 6.
Move willie for someone who produces a little less but brings move outside of scoring?

Dunno.

I see konecny had 61pts last season, i can't believe the leafs traded down instead of getting him.

Millstein yawns and presses send on that text to Julien Brisbois or Kekalainen.

Who cares.
Mickey isnt worth more than 1.2.
If millstein wants to be a child cause the leafs dont want to overpay and undeserving player of his. So be it.

I sure do hope we have seen the last of Moroncin. He has to be, what? Tenth or eleventh on the depth-chart....

Rielly
Muzzin
Brodie
Holl
Lehtonen
Bogosian
Dermott
Sandin
Liljegren
Rosen
Gaston Gingras
Moroncin

- bullethead7

Well, truthfully. From 4 to 10......only minor differences, all are....presently....#5-6 guys and press-box guys. Upside for a couple of them in a year or two (especially Sandin)....but presently just a lot of interchangeable pieces that you will see in and out of the lineup

Fair, reasonable and "market value" are all subjective terms. I'm not suggesting this won't go as smooth as butter but Arbitration is always nasty and he's got options.

If Dubas wants to keep him in the fold long term then playing too hard might not work.

What's it going to take to keep him on this side of the Atlantic? And is a 1 year deal at a low cap hit a better outcome for both sides? I think so.

When we lived in the states, ESPN2 had a game every night (two, if you count the one that started at 10:30 pm).

It was great because it would be two random teams, so you'd watch teams and players you wouldn't normally see.

It was the only year I won the hockey pool (high school pool that we kept going into our mid-30s) - I had actually seen players other than Maple Leafs.

Also, just for some context, I was listening to a radio interview with the Kings former GM, Futa? .....he was talking about Zaitsev and Mikheyev and how they were trying to get in on these guys.

He had travelled to Russia. ...set up meetings for lunch with the players ...and always got the call the night before that Player X was cancelling and had determined they were signing with the Leafs. This was always months before the player was out of contract in the KHL.

Don't tell Canuck fans or there will be a complaint.
