They won't have a team in two years. - Atomic Wedgie
Decent chance they don't have a team next year. |

I can't see it going against the Leafs, though. There's absolutely no grounds for it.
Unless they decide to channel their inner refs, just to screw the Leafs. - GreatGigInTheSky
So, you're saying it's gonna happen? |

Nah it's when the salary cap drops and Rielly is a UFA so they're (frank)ed. - BINGO!
Brother, if the cap goes down, far more teams than just the Leafs will be screwed. |

You're probably right. At this point they have Rielly - Brodie / Muzzin - Holl / Dermott/Lehtonen/Bogosian.
I do think Weegar is an upgrade over Holl or Dermott - largely because of his physicality - but you're likely correct that we have to see what you have in this team. How much of a step is Dermott going to be taking forward (if any)? Young D almost seem to have an epiphanous moment when they start their progression. I think he has the hockey IQ to make that move. - Monkeypunk
Ya I feel like Dermott hasn't really been able to enjoy a full season with a consistent role. A year on the 3rd pairing with a guy like Bogosian might help him a lot. Keep it simple, make smart passes, and muck it up a bit with Bogosian. |

You could have sucked for only 5 years to get these players, would have worked just the same. But NOOOO had to go a whole decade.
We do appreciate it though. - Scabeh

They said he has been hitting the gym hard, since he was out hurt. I would like to see them keep him. |

I'm sure adding Mike Smith will turn things around for them.
I do like the Turris contract. Cheap effective third line centre imo.
But boy, what a mess they've been. - Scabeh

Really? What I saw from him last year said the exact opposite. He's turnover prone, awful positionally... He's so easily moved off the puck it's ridiculous.
I particularly found all of his poor play amplified when you took him off the dot and put him on the wing, he's got to be the first guy I've seen on this team look worse with Tavares than he was without.
Are the metrics saying otherwise? I'm not an advanced stats guy and I'll own that outright. - joel878
I thought he played well in the playoffs. Throughout the season he was up and down.
I keep advance stats on the peripheral, i dont geek out over them, so im not sure how they were for him |

I thought Hunter ran the 2015 draft? Wasn't the story that Babs wanted the Leafs to draft Hanifin but Hunter wanted Marner? - PatC80
well we can give 15-17 to hunter..and Lou, and 18-20 to Dubas
nice and even.
15-17 looks pretty bad ..like terrible

Didn't the new CBA ensure it cannot drop?
I read something the other day on the athletic that sounded optimistic about TV revenues even during Covid. The NHL US deal is disgustingly low so even in the era of Covid there's a big jump coming.
IIRC, NHL gets 200 milly per year from the US national deal and the NBA recently renegotiated there's at 2.7 billion per year.
NBA will always be much higher but the NHL deal is 10 years old and was always really poor. Not sure what the new deal will be but networks are already fighting for the rights and it'll kick in in 2022. Possible that the NHL breaks up the rights into a number of different groups to maximum revenue. |

The Athletic talking heads had both Mikheyev and Dermott at about 1 - 1.25 on 1 yr show me's.
I'm prepared to be disappointed on Mikheyev b/c he's got some leverage.
Dermott has zero leverage. If he holds out will anyone other than his agent notice? |
