I think it comes down to term. Looks like MB might be trying to line up his forwards for their contracts to expire when they're 33-34 years old. Which would mean that, yes, Gallagher would/could be the highest paid on the team......but only for 3-4 years which Gallagher probably won't agree to.

I don't know if Bergevin was thinking of Gallagher when he said "some players will need to make sacrifices if they wanna stay in Montreal".

But if he was, I think that's a lack of respect for Gallagher and what he represents for this team.

Kinda reminds me of how he kept diminishing Radulov as a player or the impact he had on the team before cheaping out and losing him.
