Hey negative Nellie, take it down a notch, everyone was jumping off bridges when Toffoli went to Montreal, and Benning pulls this move.

Moral to the post, quit complaining and let poop unfold, or is another 100 pages of Benning is a wienerhead and ruined the club the desire, while he manages within the confines and puts together a competitive team.

- Makita

sorry, positive patsy!

you're right. benning is a genius. he bases his lineup on accurately predicting where UFAs will sign. nothing could go wrong with that plan!

So if JB can clear just a little bit of cap now and sign a middle 6 winger, we're in good shape. Crazy how things can change from absolute panic to hey we're alright in a matter of days

Edit: I forgot they still have to sign JV

- NorthNuck

i think that was the most frustrating part of seeing the toffoli signing. not panic but just frustrating... the top 6 needed another weapon. it was great to see green mix it up on the opponents with equally threatening lines when they had toffoli in there. throwing viranen or loui in that mix now doesnt have the same effect.

im holding out hope that a trade is still coming or that the second buyout window opens some other avenues to improve the forward group

I never said it wasn't a good trade, I just say you can't call it the BEST or GREATEST trade (capitalized for emphasis) unless it brings you a Cup. You can call certain trades franchise defining because they set the team up for a generation/window like the Linden for Bertuzzi trade tree, or the '99 draft day deal that brought the Sedins to Vancouver, but I don't believe any deal can be called the best or greatest in history of the franchise unless a Cup is won because of it is all.
- DariusKnight

The English Language disagrees with you.

Best, means it is better then any other trades, cup winning, etc... have no bearing on good or great trades.

Great, means better then good, so the top 5 percent of trades are great.

You're lacking the word, I'll sort you out, this isn't a cup winning trade, yet.

Is Benn really needed at this point? I think you could have a taker on him. He's UFA after this year and only 2mil, and he can play both LD/RD. I'm sure the Canucks could unload him and all of his cap... return will be pretty low, but the capspace can be used better to bolster our top 6.
- Mungo

If nate cost a 3rd, you'd need to include a third with Benn to move him.

Yeah he's been my pick since the season ended to ship off to whoever will take him

So it should be posted repeatedly as "luck", "winging it", "doesn't have a plan"

- Makita

I was just saying that everything said, good or bad about a perceived strategy, is all speculation. Stop coddling me!

Been told, the Canucks are looking for a defenseman on the market today, not a forward.

Things can change quickly but it looks like they are searching for defenseman.

the going rate for a top 4 d-man is a 3rd rounder.

if jb pays more, he's an absolute waste of a gm.

Rick has really been on top of things this off season, he's always been reliable but this last couple weeks it's like he's speaking on behalf of the organization

Regarding the remaining cap availability; IMac said this:

“Benning has more difficult work left before next season. The Canucks’ available cap space is down to $2 million, according to CapFriendly. But this doesn’t include the savings of $1.075 million for burying either Loui Eriksson or Sven Baertschi (maybe both?) in the minors next year, and the $3.5 million that opens if Micheal Ferland spends next season injured due to his series of concussions.”

I think that JBs shown that he’s now willing to play hardball so I expect something will happen with LE other than him riding out his contract in the Canuck press box. And I do think Ferland is done. No way he comes back and plays a full season again. So hopefully there’s a bit more wiggle room than $2M. We shall see.

Obviously it was a thing based on numerous conversations and was contingent on petro signing. You dont have to predict, it’s literally his job to talk to gms about who is available though. Do you really think he hadn’t talked to mccrimmon? Do you really think mccrimmon didn’t try to trade elsewhere?

He may as well, they don't say anything. Good on RD for making the calls and getting the inside scoop. He's more passionate about the team than I am.

and this presupposes that alex p. was a done deal with LVK. it worked out but let's not pretend that salary negotiations let alone trade negotiations always run smoothly.

it was a good trade and worked out well for jb/the canucks.

but let's not pretend that there wasn't an element of "planning based on things that other teams have to do." that means that there's a certain amount of luck.

it's a nuanced way to look at things. you might want to try that in a lot of facets in life.
