True, winging it.

LISTEN
@patersonjeff
: I like Schmidt the player, and he'll help the #Canucks, but this couldn't have been a part of Jim Benning's plan

- VanHockeyGuy

So the Vegas GM called Benning out of the blue and just offered him Schmidt for a 3rd?

I doubt Schmidt was their exact plan, but I think their plan was to rebuild the D (as they said) and try to poach or trade for a player to do that. By all accounts JB has been on the phones the most this off-season, so for him not to know a day or two ago about Pietro signing in Vegas and them moving out Schmidt seems a bit absurd.

That was my point, JB lucked out. Good for him.

Give it some thought.
- VanHockeyGuy

I’ve given some thought. My conclusion is that jeff paterson is a tool. Not the first time ive come to that conclusion tbh.

No, the quote being "I like Schmidt the player, and he'll help the #Canucks, but this couldn't have been a part of Jim Benning's plan" and you said winging it....

The plan was to get a D through a trade or signing. That happened. So, yes, it was a "part" of the plan. Did they know exactly which D? Could have been OEL, or Barrie, or a couple others. But the plan was to get a D. I'm sure JB knew of the realities much more than Jeff Patterson did and does – who would be available when if X Y Z happened. The trade happening right as Pietro signed showed as much. So, he more than likely knew this trade would go down before TT signed in Montreal.

Opportunistic? Sure. Winging it? Not really.

Of course. None of us are in the room. Paterson just has a higher soap box than the rest of us to shout from

Any which way, JB wanted to upgrade the D, and I feel he did. OJ + Schmidt > Tanev + Stetcher (with the $$ being fairly close too)

the last 2 days are the canucks fan base to a fcuking T.

nothing happens = sky is falling
good trade = benning is the bestest gm ever; we're contenders again!!!!!!

to both sides, take it down a fcuking notch. the team is still taking a step back next season. the cap is still an issue and will take another season (at least) to correct.

- RealityChecker

Hey negative Nellie, take it down a notch, everyone was jumping off bridges when Toffoli went to Montreal, and Benning pulls this move.

Moral to the post, quit complaining and let poop unfold, or is another 100 pages of Benning is a wienerhead and ruined the club the desire, while he manages within the confines and puts together a competitive team.

Tanev Stecher gone.

Option A) UFA market, nope.

Option B) Trade market, yup.

Schmidt fell into JB's lap.

definitely a bit of luck but by all accounts schmidt/trade was like plan j. oel was number 1 and then by the time they circled back on everyone they seemed to have lost out. its good they salvaged a good deal out of it but im sure they had a different vision on how this offseason was going to go

I'd like to see another trade for a young RFA D. If possible.

Yeah I expect that as well. No point in putting Hughes and Schmidt together. Need to spread that kind of mobility throughout your d-core. End of the game sure I could see Hughes and Schmidt together if the Canucks need to push for a goal.

Would love to see the Canucks somehow clear enough cap space to sign Hamonic, or he decides to come here on a 1 year discount for the chance to play with Hughes to increase his value for next year.

I could see the Following Combo's

Edler-Schmidt
Hughes-Hamonic
Rathbone/Joulevi - Myers

Goal would be to rotate Rathbone and Joulevi in to ease them in. If it's Rathbone I like the mobility and size on each of the pairings

- Mungo

Hate to say it but Myers is better then Hamonic

Only question is losing Markstrom can the Holtby/Demko combo keep the numbers?
Other than that there is no indication of a step backward. We just got better by losing Stecher/Tanev and gaining Schmidt. And we won both PO rounds without TT lol. Our bottom 6 is slower yes but still very capable as the PO's showed. We will be around that 15-16 spot moving up a bit from 20-21 where we were. Bubble team? maybe. But there is no indication we will drop 4-5 spots in the standings. Schmidt is just the start of Benning's master plan.

#havefaithchubs

- LordHumungous

Your math doesn't add up... you contradicts yourself.
You indicate that we won't drop 4 or 5 spots but you also indicate the we'll go from 15 /16 to 20/21.... which would drop us out of the playoffs.
Unless you meant it backwards and that we'll go up 5 spots, anyways I'm not really sure what's happening.

Our bottom six forwards still suck, nothings changed there, our top six forwards took a step back with no money to sign Toffoli, our goaltending is weaker but could level out if Demko can play lights out and the defence still needs improvement even with the addition of Schmidt and the lose of Tanev and Stetcher.

There’s roughly 2 million dollars left with Virtanen and Gaudette yet to sign, something’s gotta give still. I don’t think the Canucks are in a position to take a major step forward and be a top 10 team, in fact I think they’ll take a step back if things remain the same. Which is fine, as long as the focus on the draft and developing players.

Edit: if Juolevi can make the team the defence is better with him and Schmidt as opposed to Tanev & Stecher.

So if JB can clear just a little bit of cap now and sign a middle 6 winger, we're in good shape. Crazy how things can change from absolute panic to hey we're alright in a matter of days

Edit: I forgot they still have to sign JV

Is Benn really needed at this point? I think you could have a taker on him. He's UFA after this year and only 2mil, and he can play both LD/RD. I'm sure the Canucks could unload him and all of his cap... return will be pretty low, but the capspace can be used better to bolster our top 6.
