I think 8.5 million for Petey, post COVID-19, is a fair comparison.
- Pacificgem

Perhaps, Barzal's contract will help determine it. The Mathews contract certainly muddies the water.

True, I haven’t really seen a good young core player or a top UFA sign a COVID deal yet.

We're not talking about Virtanen, unless you're indicating he'll be traded and his cap space will be added on? Otherwise, what he signs for this year won't have an impact on the amount coming off the cap next year. The Canucks have about 8 mil in cap space right now.

This, from Drance:

So, not 2.8, it's 1.7.

Comparables for Petey: Conor 7, Marner 10, Aho 8.4, Laine 6.7, Tkachuk 7. We'll see what Barzal gets signed for, he'll be a good judgment. Using Toronto's overpayments as a benchmark isn't the best – people brought those up for Boeser and look what he was signed for.

Demko was included in the 20 mil math addition you did, so I'm not sure why you keep saying we have to add another goalie, or use the remaining money to pay a goalie. We'll have two.

I'll go over this again:

MINUS

- Sutter @ 4.3
- Pearson @ 3.7
- Sven @ 3.3
- Edler @ 6
- Benn @ 2
- Spooner @ 1
- Demko, Petey, Hughs @ 1 each

That's roughly 23.3 mil coming off the books. Also, whoever Seattle takes, if it's not from the AHL.

ADDITION

- Petey @ 7-8
- Hughes @ 7-8
- Demko @ 3
- Performance bonuses @ 1.7

Call it 20, like you want. 3.3 mil to fill out a LHD and top 6 winger. Not the best, clearly, but at this point overpaying to move Loui for 1 year (say, a 2nd rounder) frees up 5-6 mil in cap space, bringing us to 8-9.3 to fill out those positions. There's nothing set in stone about player movement in the future, so we can't really say with 100% conviction that what it is today will be there next season.

- NewYorkNuck

Boeser took bridge, which is why the Toronto comparable didn't match. His qualifying offer is $8M coming off the bridge. I would guess Mathews is the still the best match pre covid when you look at points and impact. Barzal this year will help.

Someone mentioned the other day the team and league finances cannot be used during arbitration but they'll likely come into play for negotiations.

If there's no AHL by the start of the NHL season, will the Canucks still be able to get a couple of million in cap relief by assigning Baertshchi and Ericksson to Utica?

I'm guessing not.

Let's use your numbers and not Nighthawk. Despite bonuses, it's probably safe to assume around 20m for the big three rookies unless Demko craps the bed.... which would be even worst.

We do have to assume Virtanen is gone after this season or else the cap is done.

3.3m to sign two top 6 wingers(virt and Pearson), one bottom 6 player(Sutter), one top four D(Edler) one top 6 D(Benn). I'm not going to assume that Pod or Hog are auto too 6, but we might need to pencil them in due to cap space.
Here's what our forward depth looks like.

Miller EP Boeser
....... Bo .....
Pod. Gaud. Hog
Motte Beagle Roussel
LE

Here's our D depth

Hughes Myers
....... ......
OJ. Chat
Rafferty Rathbone

And our goalies are set.

Demko
Holtby

Now, with 3.3m in a flat cap, what can we do to fill those holes?

12players signed with $33,064,788 to complete roster according to Cap Friendly. That's with LE and Ferland $9.5 hit which won't be there by then (creative solutions galore)

I’d guess there will be an equivalent option, otherwise it further penalizes all the teams even further (which is also not good for the players association). There might not be the AHL, but possibly euro-loans or a non-playing (inactive) roster requiring waivers.

Just a guess, of course. Who knows how all this shakes out.

Both of you should go to CAP FRIENDLY and start using the REAL numbers:

https://www.capfriendly.c.../armchair-gm/edit/2023650

Its $33,064,788 to complete a roster with 12 signed. Plus you know solutions will be coming on LE and Ferland's $9.5M by then.

What you're missing is: if we trade Virtanen, we also have his cap space to work with. So, assuming he signs for 3 mil this year (which we will fit under our current cap this year), we would have 6.3 mil to work with once he's traded next year, not 3.3.

We also have Ferland counting against the cap right now as he's not on LTIR. He's either in the lineup next year, or he's not (giving us more cap space). For sake of argument, let's say he's in. It's simpler.

So, going off what you said:

Miller EP Boeser
Hog Bo Ferland
Pod. Gaud. MacEwen
Motte Beagle Roussel
LE

Here's our D depth

Hughes Myers
....... ......
OJ. Chat
Rafferty Rathbone

And our goalies are set.

Demko
Holtby

We would have 6.3 million to fill those three holes. If we don't trade LE, we can send him to the AHL, and have our total be 7.3 mil. If we do pony up and trade him, we have 12.3 mil.

So, not ideal, but completely doable. Especially with options in the system like Tryamkin and Lind to fill holes on the cheap.

- belcherbd

As it stands for the season after next, with 3.3m to spend and no Virt, although we could guess he's gonna be getting between 2.5 and 3.5m and put him in the lineup, I've chosen not to.

Can EP and QH also not take bridge deals? My assumption is they will, and try to cash in more when the league/flat cap is getting better.
