I believe JB will add another D.
- Fidel

Only way I think that will happen is by moving out contracts. Benn would likely have to go, and probably Rous or Sutter too. They still have to sign Gaud and JV.

He is a decent defenseman, but is 29 and signed for 5 more years at 6 million.
The cost to acquire him versus a younger defenseman need to be weighed, whether it be a Cernak/Sergachev/Carlo or take a chance with a player like Bowey.
I don't believe 1 defenseman is going to fix this team, so let's carry-on with the rebuild

- Reubenkincade

One of those defenders is not like the others. Bowey is not an NHL defenseman.

Still giddy about this Schmidt deal. What's the D gonna shake out like?

Hughes - Schmidt
Edler - Benn/Rafferty
OJ - Myers

Edler and Myers together was a fire drill last year. Maybe they'll want to pair OJ and Myers as they'll be the "second pair" once Edler hangs them up next season?

- NewYorkNuck

So far, this is what I think it will be as well.

I've seen a lot of people complaining about the 3rd rounder the Canucks gave up in comments on other sites. It's absolutely insane. Researching the % of a third rounder actually playing in the NHL...:

From 1990 - 1999:
In order to get an accurate read of how many drafted players played at least 200 games in the NHL, a study by proicehockey.about.com looked at the drafts between 1990 and 1999. Of the 2,600 hundred players drafted just 494 or 19% played in at least 200 contests. 63% of first round picks played but less than 25% of second round picks survived and only 12% of third rounder selections. Former NHL general manager Doug MacLean said his math over the last decade showed that only 15% of second round picks ever become impact players.

From 2000 - 2009

Basically, not very good odds that player actually plays a season or two, let alone has an impact.

Schmidt will play with Hughes as a true top pairing left handed right dman for the next 5 years. Everyone thought tanev was good for Hughes, should just wait and see what Hughes does with Schmidt. Its going to be unreal.

Some were complaining about the cap as well, morons. It was a steal, no matter how you slice it. Legit top pairing D with term at a decent age... just look over time at what that has cost other teams in trades.

Hence why I said take a chance on him.
Anyways, since that comment was posted, we acquired a pretty defenseman, if you hadn't heard.
He should help the backend.
Isn't he the same defenseman you guys exposed for the Vegas expansion, so you could protect Karl Alzner?

Definitely not Karl Alzner. Caps went 5-3, and were pretty much doomed to lose a good player and GMBM refused to give GMGM picks to take someone specific.

I expect Schmidt to be with Edler on the top pairing, but I also expect to see the top 4 defensemen playing about 23 minutes each.

The fact anyone can find a way to be negative about a trade like this is absolutely mind blowing. That may end up being one of the best trades this franchise ever makes

If we meet Vegas again thats the start of a long rivalry.
- Fidel

Speaking of Vegas I'll be there as soon as the lame travel ban is lifted...who is winning the cup?? Gotta put cash down...

Losing Tanev will not hurt us one bit. Schmidt is a consistent 30+ point dman who is not injury prone. Losing Tanev and gaining Schmidt is massive for the D core.

Now...to move Edler...lol

Schmidt is seriously underrated. He played the toughest minutes in Vegas and still looked like he wasn't ever under any duress. Very poised with the puck.

Yeah I expect that as well. No point in putting Hughes and Schmidt together. Need to spread that kind of mobility throughout your d-core. End of the game sure I could see Hughes and Schmidt together if the Canucks need to push for a goal.

Would love to see the Canucks somehow clear enough cap space to sign Hamonic, or he decides to come here on a 1 year discount for the chance to play with Hughes to increase his value for next year.

I could see the Following Combo's

Edler-Schmidt
Hughes-Hamonic
Rathbone/Joulevi - Myers

Goal would be to rotate Rathbone and Joulevi in to ease them in. If it's Rathbone I like the mobility and size on each of the pairings

Edler's contract is done after this year. No need to move him right now – he has a year left in the tank to shelter OJ/Rathbone from the tougher minutes.

You might be right. Schmidt played with mcnabb to shelter theodore. I honestly am not sure if it makes more sense to mimic what he did in Vegas and shelter Hughes, or pair him with him and let Hughes have tougher minutes with more offense from his D partner

the last 2 days are the canucks fan base to a fcuking T.

nothing happens = sky is falling
good trade = benning is the bestest gm ever; we're contenders again!!!!!!

to both sides, take it down a fcuking notch. the team is still taking a step back next season. the cap is still an issue and will take another season (at least) to correct.

Our bottom six forwards still suck, nothings changed there, our top six forwards took a step back with no money to sign Toffoli, our goaltending is weaker but could level out if Demko can play lights out and the defence still needs improvement even with the addition of Schmidt and the lose of Tanev and Stetcher.

There’s roughly 2 million dollars left with Virtanen and Gaudette yet to sign, something’s gotta give still. I don’t think the Canucks are in a position to take a major step forward and be a top 10 team, in fact I think they’ll take a step back if things remain the same. Which is fine, as long as the focus on the draft and developing players.

Edit: if Juolevi can make the team the defence is better with him and Schmidt as opposed to Tanev & Stecher.

As RC said, both sides need to tone it down, cap is a big issue, as is the bottom 6, I still think they are a bubble team, not a top 10 team.
