Legare offers something they no longer have. Sets up shop in traffic and he's tough to move. Sick shot too. He probably won't make the team based on his skating, but I hope they give him a fair shot. - madmike71
The bigger reason I don't see Legare making it now is he reportedly has poor defensive awareness, which I can't see Sully liking. He does have a good attitude about working on it, just feel he needs to develop more. But right now, I see him similar to Sprong where if he can't find his way onto a top PP, he won't add enough offensive value. |

Nathan Legare scored his 2nd goal of the year this weekend. He has 5 points in his first 4 games.

I haven't given Legare much chance of making the team, but he's got 3 months of development to change my mind
Just realized, talk about a rookie wall. If anyone from juniors makes the NHL, they'll play half their season then jump into the NHL for whatever a full season is. - Tojo.
Yes, he is the prospect i am most interested in. Not because I think he is their best prospect now, but moreover the mold he fits into. Plays like a bull of a power forward and has a great, right handed shot.
Signing all of these depth guys will make it very hard for any of the young guys to break through. |

I see it differently. I think just signing all these depth guys makes it easier for them to make the team. |

I agree. As I said earlier, the only prospect they really blocked was POJ. Ironically, he's who I felt was most likely to make it.
(Yes, I'm discounting Matheson at RD until I see it. Too many times I've heard guys can play multiple positions but they really can't.) |

Yeah we basically need them all to pan out right away if we want to be competitive this season. Not a great bet. |

Right at the bottom of that article is a Tweet from Yohe saying "Only six Penguins remain on the roster from the 2017 Cup team: Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Guentzel, Rust and Dumoulin."

Oh yeah!
I would imagine salary would have to be shipped out to sign him and at this point:
Dad >>> Kovy
Dad is also RW, which we are a bit weak on. |

Yeah, if we could make the cap work I feel like we could choose between him or Kap as our 3RW, which would instantly make our third line look way better. Plus, the third line has been missing a pure scorer for awhile now and Dad fits the bill to a tee. |

Not a reflection on Casey DeSmith. But ability to add veteran partner for Tristan Jarry and put DeSmith in AHL for only $175K cap hit is why Penguins have interest. Also, internally belief is Fleury would help offset leadership/personality loss of Patric Hornqvist in room. - Rinosaur
So it takes a minimum of three players to replace Hornqvist. We traded him for two guys, we are looking at bringing back a goalie and we still want to somehow find another UFA for the 'third line'.
And how much money are talking about here? Yes, that trade is looking better all the time.

The problem is that I don't think Rutherford wants to bring in another forward for the third line. I think he likes the idea of McCann-Jankowski-Rodrigues, and that's a very bad thing.
Our forward depth certainly got a lot worse this offseason. |

100%. Rutherford is making moves just to make moves.
What is that old saying, 'any road will get you there if you have no direction.' Or as my grandfather said "All roads lead to Mountaineer Park." (Actually it was called Waterford Park at that time.) |

Dadonov likely won't replicate his success in Florida here. They built their PP around his shot, but he's a lefty. Maybe his price cones down to where it makes sense, but just expect less goals and points.
Somebody that could actually use a lefty shot should grab him. Honestly not sure why he and Flodida parted, that was a great fit. Asked for too much I imagine. |

But is the benefit of losing JJ greater than the forward depth decline? THAT is the real question for this season. |

Watch Sheary come back at 750k hahah - MattStrat
Wouldn't be mad to see Sheary @ less than $1M. Far from the ideal signing but would be a great deal.

I’m not super sure to be honest. We no longer have a player that will completely torpedo our team for an entire 4th of the game, but now we probably won’t be able to score for a 3rd of the game. The on ice product will probably better but it will probably lead to less tangible production. Will that lead to a worse or better goal differential? I don’t know. It might be an equally bad situation. |

There’s 12 teams with less than 3 mil cap space and that’s a good chunk of the contenders. Of the remaining teams most also don’t have a full team yet either so who knows their cap flexibility. The longer these guys wait I imagine the cheaper contract they are gonna have to take for a year.
I think the bigger issue is JR being happy with the 3rd line. I’m not unhappy till I see how they do, but I’d sign dadanov if possible and ship someone out to make it work. He would be a clear upgrade, and maybe give him genos spot on the pp so geno doesn’t need to smash the puck home and take some strain off the elbow. |

Johnson averaged over 19 minutes of ice time a game... try torpedoing 1/3 of the game.. compared to 3rd/4th liners... who shouldn't be getting more than 15 minutes a game.
You got those fractions backwards. |

If blueger s line is intact and someone can replace zar competently I’m sure we can get those 3rd line minutes down to 8-10 with favourable matchups. |

I agree. Even though they were called the 4th line, the Blueger line functioned as the 3rd all year. I don't believe we had 3 scoring lines rolling at any point.
So I believe we'll still be a playoff team without fixing that 3rd line. But they'll need it to go deep, so they need to fix it by the playoffs. What we open with will be fine with the upgrades at defense and top 6 forward (barely had Zucker and added Kapanen). Concerns for me are Jarry and the Blueger line repeating. |

The combination of the 3rd/4th line will probably play near a period of total ice time since Sid and Geno typically get 19 minutes of total ice time each and only share the ice on a PP, and neither of those two lines will score. You're probably right though that the ratios are even. Johnson played a (frank) ton. |
