Toffoli signed to less than I expected. MTL 4x4.25M - Rinosaur
Wow, that's cheap

No clue why we would try to emulate CBJ considering they haven’t done poop. - j.boyd919

Not sure I’d go that far. He’s certainly made some bad moves, but he’s done well in building a young promising team.
They needed room to keep Virtanen and plan for next year when some key RFA’s come due. |

Nah just gotta work harder if you don’t have an Elias Petterson or a quin Hughes. |

Erickson
Roussel
Beagle
Sutter
Baertchi
Ferland
23 Million in cap for this collection of scrubs
Didn't even try to talk to a guy who apparently wanted to stay and ended up for 4.25 per
I wonder what this does to Hoffman's price |

Again, I didn’t say he hasn’t made some bad moves, but he’s also done a lot of good. He didn’t walk into a great situation and has steered the rebuild pretty well IMO. You can’t really blame him for Eriksson’s sharp sudden decline.

Full credit for Petterson and Hughes, but he also drafted Virtanen over Ehlers/Nylander and Olli Juolevi over Matthew Tkachuk

He stunted the rebuild with his bad signings. It's the reason Trevor Linden quit as team president
Linden wanted to stay the course with youth and Benning (while promising ownership a quicker route to the playoffs) wanted to spend money on Vets
So, in comes Beagle, Roussel, Gagner, Ferland, Myers, to long term, overpaid deals that he either had to spend assets on trying to get rid of, or he can't actually get rid of
Now those deals are costing him talent from the roster, Markstrom, Tanev, Toffoli and preventing him from signing actual good free agents that will help the team with the teams youth/core on value contracts (Cost him an OEL trade, Toffoli resign, Barrie, probably a couple of others at least)
Take the absolute worst of GMJR, triple it, and you have Jim Benning or "Dim Jim" as we call him out here |

I'm just going to wait patiently for the master plan to be revealed... what we have so far is an unfinished road map. We know the direction which is younger and faster, but current roster assembly doesn't seem any more likely for success than last year. - MacPatty
I hope you are correct in that there is a master plan. Because all I see are moves just to make moves. You are right in that each move we did get younger. Kapinen being the exception. |

Younger =/= better
I would have rather kept Horny and tried to sign Ryan, Namestnikov, and Jon Merril or Stecher. |

Does anybody really use the Leafs as a model of success though? They drafted the core guys you can build a championship around, but haven't really made too many other good moves. |

TJ Brodie, Bogosian and Vesey in this year. Barrie, Clifford and others out. What do you expect from them? |

Brodie and Barrie is probably a wash. Bogosian is ass. Vesey is a plug with an overrated pedigree. |

They replaced Kapanen and Johansson with Simmonds and Vessey. Their forward depth is worse than ours offensively and that's without the shutdown line.
Brodie is a nice upgrade from Barrie, though he might be starting to slow down. That's a bad age to sign a defensive defenseman and they did that with Muzzin as well this year.
I honestly don't expect much more from them. Their stars could drag then a little deeper, but it's a thin roster. And that cap situation is only looking worse. |

I just don’t agree with you. I think we should be getting more defensive.
JR is trying to transition us into a team more in the mould of CBJ. I don’t know if it’s going to workout but I think it’s the right direction. - stackthepads
I would never do anything Columbus does, even when they were stacked they didn't win. I wouldn't do anything any other team does, honestly. We're our own team that makes our own paths, not follows in the ones of losers. |

Fast got 2 Million because it is a flat cap world. He gets 3 or more easily if the cap is 88 Million as it was projected to be. Tanev may be 500k overpaid. Big whoop
Can we all stop pretending that Matheson was acquired in a vacuum? Like Matheson was picked up for a conditional 7th and we just added his contract to the cap?
Hornquist was a 3rd line winger who on this team, with the intended makeup was dead weight. He probably had negative value around the league as Tyler Johnson, similar cost and term couldn't be given away FOR FREE
So, a spare part winger making 5.3 million was exchanged for a spare part defenseman making 4.8 million for the 3rd pairing defense. One has upside, the other we've probably exhausted all value out of
The "cap mistake" was made 2.5 seasons ago when Horn was extended when we were going for the "3peat" - TheGame316
Tanev isnt worth $3M. with our backs up against the wall to begin with plus the added cap hit of Johnson's buyout, we need to save every cent we can.
I agree with you signing Horny to that extension was wrong. I had the same view on him as I did Murray. His value was peaking in 2017, dump them to get assets while they had that value.
If I had to pick between getting a LHD signed until 2026 or Horny signed until 2023, I'd take Horny. Matheson creates a log jam at LHD. He might work out, he might not. Either way, we are stuck with him until further notice.

We probably made the biggest defensive upgrade of any team this off-season. Johnson to Matheson is a huge win.
If you separate the contracts from the actual on ice performance, I think we're already much better than last year's team.
I like the transition to younger players...The problem is were betting on too many guys to reach their potential or bounce back... Poulin, Matheson, Kapanen, POJ, Legare, mccann, jankowski, etc

I too like the transition to a younger, and faster, group. I’d love to see some of the young crop push for spots including guys like O’Connor and Maniscalco, but am a bit worried that some of the offseason acquisitions such as Sceviour and Matheson (who, I’ll admit, does intrigue me somewhat) may keep some of the younger talent from earning a roster spot. It seems like experience has trumped youth in the past. |
