Not really a fan of the Tanev signing for that kind of term and money. His best season points wise is 20 points and highest games played in a season for him is 70. Comparison to what hole he will be filling in top 4...

And we give 4 years and 4.5 million per year to Chris Tanev who can barely lace his own skates anymore. Let's hope he doesn't have a NMC and gets picked by Seattle.

Yikes, I hope Markstrom is ready for some rubber, because that D is gonna suuuuuck.

Barely lace his skates? he way one of Vancouvers better players in the playoffs...guy is a great skater and very good defensively

Wouldn't mind packaging Monahan and Hanifin to bring in a top D then going out and signing Hall, move Lindholm to center and play one of JG or Hall on their off wing. lol

It's not all about points with defencemen. He's a solid defenceman who makes the players he plays with better. He helped Hughes a ton last year and could end up a good partner for Valimaki if they put Andersson with Giordano.

He's the only defence first guy the Flames have right now.

I just mean, had he waited, I think the price comes down... Seems reactive to Brodie's deal

Brodie got 4x5 and I dont see Tanev as a downgrade on TJ. Brodie is a better skater but Tanev can skate, has a bit more bite and can play 2nd pair minutes for sure. He also wore an A in Vancouver so he must be a good team guy! Thank God I was getting worried it was going to be Tyson Barrie! We will let the Canucks make that mistake.

Definitely agree here this just gives us more options to better balance this roster.

I like the Tanev signing. True RD man with a solid pedigree. Good team guy and true shut down defence man. Only problem is he doesn’t have very many teeth left to block shots.

He should be a big upgrade on Hamonic.

I would play him on the first pairing to start the season as Andersson and Hanifin actually have pretty good chemistry together.

Tanev sounds kinda like a Kris Russel....his numbers look terrible and gets the label of defensive d-man, sacrifices body but because the advanced stats all show that he has to play defense more often than not for all the wrong reasons

What kind of difference do you think Markstrom is going to make? Talbot and Khudobin both had better stats than Markstrom last year. Seems like it makes way more sense to have a solid team in front of the goalie. They're still a mediocre defensive team.

Markstrom has also faced a ton of shots over the past few years and had multiple injuries last year. The Flames will be lucky to get 60 games out of him.

THis scares me
Everyone says now we have a bonafide #1 and that's what you gotta pay for one

I'm unconvinced he should have got top tier money....maybe last year, but in a flat cap and a market with ALOT of goalies, it seems like a normal UFA overpay
He had 1 or 2 decent seasons....never saw him as an elite goalie until this past season

He was without question the best UFA goalie available and his last 2 years have been outstanding. 6 years is a long time for sure but he is an upgrade for us.

This was an incredible pickup for you. People complaining about term or AAV should understand that there are very few bargaining chips when getting a starter, top pairing defensemen or top 6 forward via free agency. You always pay premium. Markstrom will give you guys 3 or 4 years of solid netmind, something you guys haven't had since kipper. Today was a good day for Flames fans, worry about years 4/5/6 when you're in years 4/5/6.

As for tanev, you are getting a heart and soul player, that maybe his best years are behind him, but he doesn't require expansion protection and fills the hole left by brodie. Again, worries about years 3/4 in years 3/4, you guys got a started and a bona-fide 2nd pairing dmen for nothing.

Totally agree and we have trade capital and cap space left to complete the puzzle. I'm thrilled with where this is going!

Id expect similar numbers if he can stay healthy. 20-25 points over 82. He did that played with Hughes, so maybe a slight drop off depending on who he's paired with, but you didn't sign him for his point production. He will suppress shots and block a ton. You guys will like him

A year ago this contract was a steal.... today not so sure.
Hoping for a JG for Dumba & a sweetener deal now.

- DEDDIE

Lol!!! Don’t be dumb! No offence!

If BT traded Johnny straight up for Dumba he’d be fired if not killed!

We have 5 LW not counting Chucky who is untouchable and our #1 LW (JG, MANG, DUBE, BENNY, LUCIC). This is clearly a position of strength for us and by definition trade capital.
We also have the ability to trade a C as we have 3 wingers who are options to move to the middle (Lindholm, Bennett, Dube) and in fact I believe Bennet has earned the right.

Well I never said straight up, in fact I have said Dumba plus a sweetener multiple times. This is very unlikely now that Tanev has been acquired but JG is our best trade chip.
