Oh. I am not happy about the trade at all. I am trying not to over-react since it really doesn't matter in the short-term. They are not going to be good next season.

I am more concerned cause I thought they could get a better return for Saad in the terms of future assets. I.E, picks/prospects. Especially with retaining.

- Elbows15

Everyone thought Lehner would gather a first, nope. Who was able to command #1 draft choices? Cost controlled third and 4th liners like Goodrow and Coleman. Finance considerations are currently just as important as the talent level of the players. Tampa Has tried to give away Tyler Johnson and haven t been able to do it.

I get the reaction to the trade, but lets wait for the team to fully come together before judging too much. Plus, I recall the initial reactions to acquiring Murphy and Oduya (the first time) were quite negative but they worked out ok.

Could Stan have done better? Possibly. Probably. I would have rather a 1st round pick or Jost, but I don’t think the deal is horrible.

I don’t care how good, or bad Zadorov ends up being for this team, trading your only physical top 6 winger is a bad idea.

Plus, Russian

I knew you’d love the Russian factor.

As Ty tweeted, does this open the door for The Drake to return?

Bad trade at first blush unless there is another move or two. Problem is that bold moves are not something this organization has done in a long time.

You don’t F over guys that won you Cups. There was a deal for CC between what Stan offered and what he got from NJ. And this deal isn’t good.

They’re going to lose the support of the core. M6 fear is they get off to a slow start 1.1.21, and ‘Good Ship Blackhawk’ heads straight for the iceberg.

Its time to rebuild, they never F'd over Crawford, I would argue that they went out of their way to support him, if even half of the rumors are true.

It was time to rebuild two years ago, if anything, be unhappy they didn't start when they should of.

Gotta believe some of the sentiment here about McD not wanting to rebuild is probably true.

The goal should always be to win cups, not make the playoffs. I myself am happy that they are finally realizing it, and look to be doing it.

They were never going to be able to retool and win a cup. When they play a top 10 team in the league, they look awful and totally outmanned.

Having Crawford and Lehner, put the rebuild off a year, and kept them in it enough to get 17th pick instead of a top 5. #17, while a great number, isn't how you rebuild and win cups.

I think Murphy and/or de Haan are next to go (and soon).

Hopefully its De Haan, though I would assume Murphy would fetch a better return.

Like the idea of the young Dman having a protector.

But they lost some of the only physicality they had in the forward group with Saad. And not to mention defensive capability. Suter gets his chance at the top 6, which is good, but you've lost size with that swap since Suter is Kane sized.

Maatta is on par defensively (better on the PK) and offensively but slightly less physica than Zadorov but you've subtracted defense from the forward group so ultimately made the team worse for only minimal cap space to show for it.

- L_B_R

And no net gain in draft picks or prospects who are nothing more than career minor leaguers. This includes both the Maatta and Saad trades.

Agree on your first point. Hence my defining what was described by Crow as bad faith negotiating. If the deal put down was not presented as "take it or leave it," and if true that Stan stopped picking up the phone for further negotiations or to make that clear, that's uncool when dealing with a 17 year veteran on your team.

Feels like the Core support was largely gone as time with JC as head coach went on, and I think the plan is to ram right into that iceberg and build a new ship.

Honestly, I hope they keep deHaan. With his injury history, they won't get much of a return. On the other hand, we did just trade a top 6 power forward for a third pairing dman, so...

Net savings $1.8M, not counting Gilbert and Lindholm. Someone check my math.

@BenPopeCST

Nikita Zadorov is actually NOT an RFA, anymore.

The new Blackhawks acquisition signed a 1-year, $3.2 million contract right before the trade occurred, per the official release.

- Theo Fox

I thought you are were pining for some physicality around our small defense.

We just got it for a player in Saad they were NOT going to re-sign.

Avs players loved him, and he plays in the middle pair much of the time...he gets shifted up and down, I believe.

I know. But Zadorov is big and tuff and playoff teams like that going into the playoff so maybe the Hawks can get some future assets for him since they pissed away the chance to do it with Saad.
- Elbows15

Fair enough.

Let's hope so.

Zadorov is only above average defensively if you don't adjust for him being in a bottom pairing role. There isn't anything in his analytics that suggests he's 2P quality at this stage but I guess him being only 25 means he has time but for a proven top 6 player and retaining... eh.

Or could be the agent didn't read the landscape correctly. I don't think it was handled poorly. It is always going to be emotional for a player to leave an organization that he has been a part of for 17 years. Given Crow's injuries the last little while it was probably time to move on.

Most of us don't like it but it prolly is the right move.

Not sure if all of the logic works on this analysis, but net, for Saad and Panarin, they basically got back a couple of years of Anisimov and (now) Zadorov (plus filler).

Avs board not convinced they won the trade. If we all want Jost good chance Sakic likes him too. We got a young real NHL player. Even #1 picks are not guaranteed and looking 2 years out anyway. The lower the pick the longer the wait. Stan said get younger he didn't say what his time frame is to be good again. Finally, we have no way of knowing the budget Rocky has given him for this year?

Right this minute I’m thinking the only thing that makes this trade sensible would be somehow they needed Zadorov to complete another deal.

Can’t imagine how, but....

Saad is at $6MM on this contract, ending after next season.

Given league finances, and the type of player Saad is, I think his next contract would be for that amount or a little less.

If so - affordable and doable by the Hawks.

I'm a big fan of yours because I don't know much about the "fancy stats," but you post them in ways that dumb it down so that people like me understand them. I really hope you stick around for a while. I used to go to SCH a lot, but between working full time (plus), and trying to start my own business, I have limited time for jockey info. I basically decided on Center Ice, The Athletic, and HB to get my Blackhawks fix.
