Why? The Hawks will not be in a position to be a legit contender for the Cup for at least 2 years so they don't need Kuemper for those 2 years. He would be a "let's see if we can win now" move that would be at odds with this supposed "new direction" Stan said.

If Kuemper in goal would mean 5 or 6 more wins than Delia/Subban/Lankinen it wouldn't mean anything other than the Hawks drafting 5 or 6 spots farther down in the 2021 draft.

Take our lumps now and be better for it down the road.

No reason at this time to give up a prospect who could play for years for an old goalie.

Would be appreciated if we make a serious run for playoffs which means not trading Saad. The fans deserve the excitement to watch good hockey as they challenge for a spot. There might be a push to play too many kids too soon if a veteran is traded. I foresee Carlsson as a solid addition and Pious Suter will help. I would consider even experimenting with Hagel on a second offensive line only because I feel the team needs more grit and fearlessness challenging for pucks from at least one of the top two lines in forecheck and along boards. If Boqvist stronger, more confidant plus the goaltending is descent, we can make a serious playoff run.
- jhawk59

At 20 years old I think Boqvist still has a long way to go. Any improvement will be good improvement.

Remember arz has to cut cost due lack of revenue coming in. The most give up for kuemper would be a 2nd and that's it. Imo bowman needs to make a decision continue with the youth rebuild and suck for 1 or 2 years or go for it and appease the vets. None of this half way or in the middle stuff pick a direction and stick with. Continue to get picks and young players for the future. Trade Saad in the off-season then Murphy or dehann at tdl. Have a conversation with the core 4 and tell what the plan is. If they want stay great got winning experience to teach the kids. If not and want to chase another cup then accommodate them as best as possible.

If they do decide to part with Saad, you don’t just deal him “for anything”. If the Hawks are in free fall at the TDL, that's when you deal him and get back a first round pick, plus.

Also, unless any of those guys are willing to waive NTC’s and then find a competitive team with $10.5M in cap Space, they are here for the duration which I’m ok with.

I don't think you're gonna get a first round pick + for a 40 point winger. Look at what Tyler Toffoli was traded for. i know Toffoli isn't a good two way winger

Exactly, not paying an old goalie $4.5 and also give up assets. The only way I would take Kuemper is for a 5th and they retain at least 30%, AZ does not like that, then oh well, move on. Why are we giving up Beaudin, he was a 1st round pick, albeit a late first round pick, but he has upside to be a steady Dman, that can make that first pass, does not seem to panic. Yes Boqvist, Carlsson and Mitchell are getting all the accolades, but I’m looking forward to Beaudin being a Blackhawk, I like what I’ve read and I didn’t notice him in the one game that he played. Just for comparison I did notice when Gilbert played, like starting a fight in a close game for no reason whatsoever.

You can’t compare Saad to Toffoli. Saad has size, speed, plays a two way game, scores over 20 goals and is one of the top penalty killers in the NHL. In this current cap situation, you could be right about him not getting us a first rounder, but under normal cap circumstances, yes Saad would net you a first rounder.

If Arizona wants to shed salary, I will give them Beaudin for Jacob Chychrun. Most of their other players are untradeable.

Kuemper .... two years left at 4.5. I love the fit for the Hawks. What would we part with...a first???....2nd and a decent prospect???...what would it take??
They don't want salary back. So pick and prospect may do it...

- hawk35

Nah, cash is king, if Yotes want to unload Kuemper it'll be for nothing, Stastny is a great example

Just visited this blog for the first time because I was curious what the Hawks were up to goalie-wise, after both Crow and Lehner cruised. Great stuff, I wish the Leafs and Pens blogs were this thorough and well-written. Good luck!

Thanks for posting the scouting video on Louis Crevier. It's great to see a video about a D prospect that features them actually playing defense. It bothers me how videos are more often than not of prospects (F or D) just scoring goals or assisting on them.

Give me videos of them competing for pucks, defending, and doing the little things to help the team win. You learn so much more from those clips, i.e. how do they play without the puck, how do they impact the game in other ways other than offense, etc.

One thing I liked hearing in Mark Kelley's comments on Chad Yetman and Isaak Phillips are how the Hawks scouts would go to the Erie and Sudbury games in juniors to view other prospects but Yetman and Phillips would just stand out every game.

That bodes well for them as they hopefully rise up the ranks. Those observations match their scouting reports. Players who don't have high compete level won't stand out like that. Floaters and one-trick ponies will disappear for long stretches.

Glad we don't have floaters amognst the 2020 Chicago draftees. Most of them may not be elite talents but they at least have the drive to help their teams win.

Long time reader/lurker here, enjoy your approach to the Blog Theo, thank you for your efforts!

I have been as critical as anyone on many of Stan's moves over the years, but agree that now was the time to move on from Crow and develop the kids to see what we have in house (please no to Kuemper.) Have to like the Kubalik signing at 2 yrs, and excited to see the young guns on D this upcoming season with no expectations we're in the hunt for the cup.

It's also only interesting to look at Stan from an ownership standpoint when looking at Cap vs. actual salaries. Yes, Toews and Kane's AAV are $10.5, but their actual salaries are $7 or so. Kieth's AAV is $5.5 but he's earning what- $2? Shaw is also $1M in cash outlay below his cap hit. Bottom line, these 4 guys are being paid $10 million below their cap hits and that's good biz during the current revenue climate. Gives me a dif't perspective on a players "value" when evaluating T&K, etc..

At 20 years old I think Boqvist still has a long way to go. Any improvement will be good improvement.
- rpeters01

Just not sure how much improvement until he becomes much noticeably stronger. Stronger hopefully equates with increase in confidence. How long until he is stronger. It has to be natural enough add in strength so his skill is not affected. See DeBrincat whom compromised his skill by bulking up too much per his body capacity ....he surely didn't loose ability ....he merely blocked the skillet. For DeBrincat i surmise he can return to his 40 goal form once he gets his body right

Maybe therefore depending upon Boqvist body type he needs to gradually add strength. Is he a big boned you know like broad shoulder kid. It may be asking too much for Boqvist to add considerable strength soon and possibly long term as well.

When recently reportedly some in Blackhawk organization said to sour on Boqvist. If there is any shred of creditibility perhaps it is about Boqvist able to get much stronger and retain his skill set. Emphasize here i am just digging on a subject that may not have any truth to it.

Maybe pair boqvist with big physical stay at home defense might increase his confidence plus its up to him to put the work in the gym.

Good point to remember on the “low” actual cash outlay for those you mentioned - $7 each for Kane and Toews, $2.6 for Keith - $16.6 cash compared to $26.5 cap hit. (That’s before escrow return or proration because of a shorter season).

The term on on Johnson’s contract is just too much to take on.

I expect the Hawks to remain quiet for the rest of the off-season, they’ll re-sign Strome to a bridge deal and that’s about it.

Once the season starts they’ll put Smith on LTIR and create cap space to make some moves.

The Hawks will want to give Suter a chance, I think they’ll need to make space in the top 9. I think Saad is gone, and he’ll bring back a decent return.
