With Lehner signing for 5 million per, there's no reason for any goaltender on the UFA market at the moment to make more than that.

Markstrom is a good G, but Talbot had better numbers than him this season, so if Markstrom aks for 6 million and Talbot is ok with 3, I say give Talbot a few more years.

My choice would be Holtby. He sucked real bad this year (as Talbot sucked real bad his last year with the Oilers), but there's no reason for him not to rebound, especially behind a tighter defensive system like the Flames' (just like Talbot did). I doubt anybody would throw huge money at him, so try to bait him with a 1 year 4 million offer. If it doesn't work, go 3 years at 3 per.

Treliving's a big fan of ruining all the good work he does with awful UFA moves. So probably.

You're not wrong though.

He does a ton of good work and just enough weird bad things to negate it.

Oh, and giving Wennberg a 1 year prove-it contract wouldn't be a bad thing to take Jankowski's place at center and on the PK. He also has upside offensively. Although someone will probably roll the dice and offer him 2-3 years at around 3 per.

Did you see how Calgary played defence this year? They gave up 30 fewer shots for the entire season. Both teams were bad last year. High danger chances against was the one area where Calgary did alright last year, and it's still only one chance a game fewer than Vancouver gave up.

If Markstrom will come to Calgary for 10 million over 3 years, sure, see ya, Talbot. But that's not happening.

So how do people feel about the draft?

I thought it went great considering out position going in. We may not have got any potentially elite talent but I think that was really only available inside the top 14 or so. After that it is my opinion that there really wasn’t much separation between that point and the rest of the 1st round.

The trade backs we’re gambles on our part but with the extra pick we managed to get a guy in free-fall while still getting the guy we wanted in the 1st.

The rest of our picks look pretty solid for where they were selected. Tough to say about the Russian goalie and the Russian we took in the 7th but only time will tell. Same goes for boltman, tough to project a player drafted out of high school so we’ll see how he does in the NCAA.

Lastly the kuznetsov pick in the second looks a lot better after reading his post draft interview than I initially thought. Good size and while his report states he’s a defensive D he still put up 2 goals and 11 points as a freshman in the NCAA. What’s most impressive about that stat is he joined NCAA a year early (I believe based on birth day) making him the youngest player in all of college hockey.

Considering freshman don’t get a ton of opportunity and college goalies being more developed than those in the CHL, to put up any decent numbers is a good sign

I like it. tre and button have a history of finding gems in the 3rd round and later. I haven't even heard of that boltman kid before but they were pretty confident in drafting him. same thing with that Russian goalie. I think tre and the scouting staff targeted them and traded down in the first to draft them specifically. I don't think he traded down just to draft anyone in the third. well... maybe poirer but the potential is too hard to pass up at that point. they clearly wanted that boltman kid and that Russian goalie. They even admitted that they reached for the Russian goalie in the 4th and I think its pretty clear they reached for boltman. tre and the scouting staff has done an amazing job drafting recently, especially in the later rounds. plus we still drafted a solid prospect in Zary. solid draft day for the flames

now if we traded down and drafted boltman in the 1st like we did with Janko, I'd be pissed. but we still got a guy who was projected anywhere from 14th to 20th, got an insanely offensive defenceman, and a kid they love and took a gamble on who may or may not pan out. all for trading down to draft a player that I would have had no problem drafting at 19. I'd call that a win
